Default 128mb sdram shows as 64mb in Intel JN440BX

i am trying to restore a legacy system as follows:

OS: win98SE
MB: intel JN440BX AA690874-405
CPU: Pentium II at 400Mhz with 100 Mhz bus
Bios: just flashed latest - 4J4NB0X1.86A.0043.p20

Memory module: Microtech 128mb ECC double sided with 9 chips/side in
slot 0 [pc100]
chips a 0027 fff 5264805ETTA60 PC100-222-60

On boot, mem shows only 64mb
checked config and sys does not force mem to only use 64mb

Any ideas on how to get use of full 128mb?

Sounds like the wrong type of memory to me. It's only reading one side:-(

Have you checked the MoBo manual?

Get
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
and/or
http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php
and see if it is in fact being seen.

The correct memory for that Mobo is:

16M x 64 (128 MB) Unbuffered SDRAM Non-ECC - 100 MHz
Micron Full MT16LSD1664AG-10CD4
Micron Full MT18LSDT1672AG-10EC7

The correct memory for that Mobo is:

16M x 64 (128 MB) Unbuffered SDRAM Non-ECC - 100 MHz

Those are listed, but are not the only ones that work.
specs allow for both ecc and non-ecc and either pc66 or pc100 speeds.

From Intel:
"The motherboard has three, dual inline memory module (DIMM) sockets.
Minimum memory size is 16 MB; maximum memory size is 768 MB. The BIOS
automatically detects memory type, size, and speed.

The motherboard supports the following memory features:

168-pin DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
66 or 100 MHz (matching Host Bus speed) unbuffered SDRAM only
Non-ECC (64-bit) and ECC (72-bit) memory
3.3 V memory only
Single- or double-sided DIMMs in the following sizes:

DIMM Size Non-ECC Configuration ECC Configuration
16 MB 2M x 64 2M x 72
32 MB 4M x 64 4M x 72
64 MB 8M x 64 8M x 72
128 MB 16M x 64 16M x 72**
256 MB 32M x 64 32M x 72

** This is the module installed, 128mb ecc

Memory can be installed in one, two, or three sockets. Memory size can
vary between sockets.

Note: BIOS revision P14 or later is required to support 256 MB DIMMs.
The 256 MB DIMMs used with this board must be built with 128 Mbit
device technology."
======================

I have BIOS P20 so that should not be an issue..

Unfortunately, I don't have another system that uses ecc ram so can't
swap it to test.

I'll garantee it's incorrect memory:-( Seen it many times. BTW if you put it
in another machine that does NOT tell you anything!

If it reports as 128mb in another machine, it does tell that the mem
dimm is ok I think. It may not work on the Intel mobo perhaps but at
least it would resolve it to being a system/bios/config issue rather
than a defective part, wouldn't it?

It depends on the MoBo chipset AND the memory chips etc.

yes, and
http://www.intel.com/support/motherb...0bx/jn_mem.htm
shows that this mobo can use either ecc or non-ecc, single or double
sided dimms. My mem brand is not listed, but it appears to meet the
specs of the mobo as intel publishes the same, although the specs do
change from doc to doc in Intels kb.

Buy the correct dimm.

Go to www.crucial.com and use their Selector widget.
They guarantee you will get the correct dimm...
