Default Suggestions for DVD software

I've recently ordered my 1st DVD writer (liteon 811s), after having used a
cd burner for a couple years. I'm pretty familiar with all the various
programs for audio (burners like Nero/NTI/EZCD, rippers like EAC, editors
like cooledit, etc) but I'm wondering what might be some good/suggested
software analogous to these audio titles to have with a DVD burner. I know
the question will be "what do you plan to do with it?", at this point I know
I'll use it for ripping/burning commercial DVD's, and for making data disks,
but since I haven't owned one previously there may be some
functions/capabilities of this hardware which I'm not familiar with. Also I
expect the writer will come with some bundled programs, but these aren't
always the best (e.g., new scanners usually have basic imaging software but
don't typically come with Photoshop 8). So any suggestions of upgraded DVD
software would be appreciated. I understand the Pinnacle line is good,
correct?

TIA

Dan

I suggest that you start with the bundled software for two reasons (the
same as for CD, by the way).

1. You may be able to get support with that software but are less likely
to with something the drive manufacturer does not include.

2. You'll learn what additional features you want or need. Then you can
buy the new software that fits your requirements.

You'll likely get Sonic My DVD with the Lite-On. I haven't bothered to install
it, since there are a ton of very good programs available, many of them for
free, that are said to be better. There are also many tutorials available for
the popular ones. Surf on over to www.dvdrhelp.com and you will find a lot of
solid information, as well as links to all the doom9 tutorials. You will likely
want to get DVDDecrypter (ripping and (if desired) burning), DVD Shrink (ripping
when compression is needed) and Nero 6.3 (burning). You'll also later likely
need an authoring program when you are starting from scratch to make your own
DVD, and one of popular ones is TMPGenc Author (yes, from the same company who
makes TMPGenc Plus).

Those are just a few of the ones you'll likely read about, but there are many
more. Again, www.dvdrhelp.com is the best jumping off place.
