ASUS A7N8X and INFINEON Memory

Hello

I am about to upgrade my PC from an Abit KT7A fitted with an Athlon 1800XP
for an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe.

I bought with it two 256 MB DDR PC 333 memory.
The memory is Infineon with a sticker on CM333/256/3rd
on the ICs is stamped HYB25D256800BT-6, which according to the Infineon Web
site seems to be Cas 2 at 133Mhz and Cas 2.5 at 166 Mhz (Can you adjust the
memory bandwidth?

Is this memory good for the board as I have read that you should stick to
brand name memory for this ASUS model.
I don't want to hold back a good board with inferior products!!
Will the 1800 Athlon operate better in this board, should I now look at a
2600?? I'm not particularly flushed with cash at the mo though.

I am living in Germany and most sellers advertise Infineon and Twinmos
memory, in the UK Kingston and Crucial seem to be the most popular.
When I placed the order I asked for Infineon believing it to be a good named
brand??
When I picked up the order from the shop the memory came in reused Kinston
Value Ram package (not sealed).
The shopkeeper noticed I was studying the package and quickly pointed out
that it was not Kingston RAM, I then asked if it was Infineon as a sticker
on the stick actually had the name of the shop on it.
The shopkeeper said did I want Infineon to which I said I;I'll have whatever
will work best with the board.
he changed it for the Infineon RAM I think there was an attempt to palm me
off with non branded memory??

I'm running the A7N8X-DX with a 2500 Barton using 2X256 Crucial 2700. This
setup works very well and has been running fine for 3 months. This board does
have a reputation for being very memory sensitive. IOW.....fussy, finicky,
PITA. The general concensus is the ram must be one of the better quality
brands....Crucial, Corsair,Twinmos, some types of Kingston,etc...and no cas3.

I've read hundreds of threads on the Asus newsgroup concerning memory problems
and it seems to just be a crapshoot. It seems to be hard to determine if the
brand of memory causes the problems or the setups that some people try to use.

One thing is certain, this board won't do cheap memory. All you can do is to
load, cock and shoot. I'm not familiar with the Infineon brand but it seems to
be quality memory and I haven't heard anyone complain about it.

Check your board out for Rev. number, it's listed on the board between the pci
slots 2 and 3. REV. 1 and Rev. 2 are very different and use different bioses,
so be careful when flashing that you have the right one.

Your 1800+ will run fine with this board but, of course, an 3000+ will run
better. That's a money factor question that only you can answer.

I am living in Germany, too, and there is no problem to order memory
from www.crucial.com/uk (= reselling branch of Micron) to be sent to
Germany via UPS.
Infineon (formerly Siemens) is very good RAM - if it is "Original" (or
"Infineon + Infineon") i.e. Infineon chips on an Infineon module (the
other being "Infineon 3rd" or "Infineonchip" which is considered as
minor).
