Default Twain error with canoscan 8400F - solution

The twain interface (ScanGearCS 10.220) out of the box of my new
canoscan 8400f did not work on my windows xp machine. I got error
messages such as:
- The twain interface is not working: reinstallation might help
- rmslantc.dll not found.

The solution is:
Canon has hardcoded the lenght of the variable which holds the windows
path in its twain interface. My path was too long: The twain interface
ScanGear CS fails. I shortened the path to 702 characters: now the
interface works. I suspect that the limit is at 768 characters (I have
not tested that).

So if your Canon Twain driver does not work on Windows XP (might be the
same for win 2k): shorten the path.

Egad!!!!! You have a directory path that's seven HUNDRED and two characters
long? How many subdirectories? What are you calling these that takes so many
characters? You'll find that lots of software would have problems with such
enormously long paths.

Hi- I have this problem too. I just bought the scanner (same one) and I
realy don't want to send it back, I did so much research before
choosing this one! I'm not comfortable just deleting characters from a
path- could you please let me know just what you entered (Or deleted
since I'm sure it's shorter) for the working path? Thanks so much-

You could uninstall the Canon software.
Then do a "Custom install" and specify a short path for program files.

Such as C:\Canon. Then all the scanner files will have much shorter paths.
