Default Problem with CD writing

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Laptop and I am experiencing some problems with the
CD writer. I can write data to a fresh CD-R. Everything is fine. But
when I try to append data to CD-R which already has some data present,
everything goes fine, but I cannot find the written files in the CD. I
tried burning CDs using Windows XP CD writer wizard and also using
Drag n Drop CD. In both I get the message that CD writing was
successfull, but I cannot find the file. I called up Toshiba Service
Centre, they adviced me to format the hard disk using their recovery
disk to rule out any software issues. What do you think about this
problem. Is this a software problem or hardware problem.

One more thing is first time this problem appeared after installing
Windows Movie Maker 2.0 . I tried to burn a movie to CD using this
software, got the successfull completion message, but CD was empty.

Priyesh

The most important question here is what you mean by "empty". I know it
means that you cannot see the files, but is the disc still blank or has
some of it been used? If the missing files have used up space, the disc
was written but is not reading; if they have used no space, then the
write did not occur. The causes are different and the fixes are
different. I assume that you have checked the discs in other drives.

Note that the successful completion message does not mean that the disc
was written correctly, only that no error was reported. Since the
program does not read the disc back, it cannot know whether the write
occurred at all.

Have IsoBuster look at the problem CDs:
http://www.isobuster.com

Post back what IsoBuster says about filesystem, like ISO or UDF, and for
ISO the number of sessions.

Yesterday I restore the machine to May 1st ( I am having Windows XP)
and burned three files one after the other. After burning I could see
the files, one was a mp3 file. I could play the music..everything
fine. Then I took the CD out and put is again. I cannot see the 3
files I burnt. I took out the CD and put it again, now I can see one
file. I took out and put it again, this time I can see 2 files. This
is rather strange.. Any ideas/help is greatly appreaciated

Thanks
Priyesh

(What's the *full* version number of your Easy CD Cremator?)

When you say you burned 3 files one after the other, were you burning
them in 3 sessions using Ezcd, or were you making 3 drag&drop's using
DirectCD (or Drag-to-Disc)?

Thanks for your help. I do not have Easy CD creator. I am using Drag n
Drop CD software and CD writing Wizard coming with Windows XP. I
burned files in three sessions using Drag n Drop software. I had done
this successfully without any problems in the past using this software
and the same drive. Another thing to add is yesterday I restored my
entire harddisk using the recovery CD. But the problem continues.
Could this be a firware problem or a issue with drive itself

Priyesh

You went back to the working configuration, yet the problem persists!
Maybe the burner needs some cleaning? If taking out the drive is not
that easy, I would first try blowing in compressed air and dislodge any
loose dirt. If that still doesn't work, ask Toshiba about taking out
the drive and cleaning it.

Thanks for your help again. I talked with Toshiba support centre and
they have arranged to send my laptop to their repair centre on Monday.

Although I don't think this is your problem, I was never able to
sccessfully add files in multiple sessions using winxp. Nothing
consistent about the results. At that time I was also having a session
problem with a freeware program, burnatonce. I think it may be something
to do with my burner. I now use burn4free with no problem at all along
these lines.
You should download the free version of isobuster as suggested by smh.
It's a great little utility and will tell you what is on the cd even if
windows won't.
