How do I get rid of this pointless mixer?

You have to install a sound card and disable the on-board sound.

It may be redundant but pointless its is not !

There are controls for SP/DIF in there. However, you don't have to load it upon boot. It
can be removed from the HKLM "run" location. I believe it's mixer.exe.

Yep - i've just taken it off the start up menu.. I would install my
soundblaster live 1024 if i could... haven't been able to get it going under
winXP yet

If you get a new audio card, there is an option in the BIOS to disable
the onboard audio. I think this got rid of the Mixer, as well as the
entries in the Control Panel hardware list. Now your sound card should
work!
