Default modem for compaq deskpro PIII 600mhz

Hi,

I have a compaq deskpro, PIII 600mhz, low profile computer. It came with a
network card, but no modem. I took a modem from a year-old computer and put
it into the compaq, but the compaq refused to see the card. I tired
installing the modem on com ports 1 and 2, but nothing worked. Is there a
special brand/type of modem needed? the compaq has 2 slots open.

thanks in advance for your help

I've had issues in the past where I have installed a PCI modem and
Windows has just refused to see it. Not even an unknown device in the
device manager. I have had a 90% success rate installing the modem by
installing the generic Lucent/agere winmodem drivers. Of coures this
only works on Lucent/agere chipset modems.

Driver can be found he
http://www.agere.com/support/client/modem_driver2.html

download, open the folder and click on setup. It will ask if you want
to install modem drivers, say yes. Sometimes the Windows 'New
Hardware Wizzard will then pop up" other times it dosn't. No rhyme
or reason for this. If it does, cancel it and just finish the Lucent
driver install. Good Luck.
