Default GX110 - trying to add a CD-ROM drive - getting "Unrecognized Device"

I have a pair of the small GX110/733s and they do indeed use the laptop
style CD drives. I've replaced both of the ones I have and the last one was
$12 shipped (Ebay). Not too shabby for a kids computer.

Andy,

Very interesting - thanks for the info.

Did you need a special IDE cable to make this work? I have a spare laptop
CD/DVD drive from a ThinkPad. It looks like the IDE connection is not the
standard 40-pin config but a much smaller connector. Of course, you
probably already had the cable in your system, right? Or did you also have
to get a cable to make this work.

Just curious as to how you made this work Thanks for any info/insights!

Keith,
Just looked and the cable appears to be a standard IDE cable. The CD drive
is at the end of the same cable the hard drive is on. The drive is in a
caddy. This is what you're looking for:

I don't think that this is a notebook drive but a desktop "slim" drive.
Look at www.newegg.com and search on slim drives. These appear to have
standard IDE connectors. Newegg also has "slimline" notebook drives
that have modified connectors. The two types are not interchangeable.

Thanks a lot, Andy and Q!

This is really helpful info. I buy a lot of stuff from NewEgg, so I will
check that out. I don't know why I didn't think to look there first!
(Also, I am going to bid on the eBay drive - that would be a bargain.)

Thanks again for all your help.

Notebook and desktop slim CD-ROM (or CD-RW or DVD-ROM or DVD-RW) drives start
out on the same factory assembly line. Then the manufacturer adds a front
plastic bezel to fit the requirements of the (usually) name-brand buyer. The
manufacturer also adds the necessary widgets to attach the drive to the cable or
adapter inside the computer chassis.

Taking a drive manufactured for one system and making the changes to adopt it to
another system is tricky work, not recommended for the impatient or someone
without a lot of mechanical aptitude... Ben Myers
