It would be as legal as it is to use any discs that came with it...
you either have a license or don't, the media has nothing to do with
it.

If you're running Windows 98, you probably don't need anything to make it work.
I'm in the middle of rebuilding my Win98SE system, and I have the HP 5P
scanner, SCSI attached. I have not as yet installed any of the scanner
software, but I'm able to scan a picture into Kodak Imaging (which is included
with W98 accessories).
Hook it up, boot up, look in Device Manager for an Imaging Device, which should
be the scanner (if it works). Go to Control Panel/Scanners & Cameras, if your
scanner shows up there, click on properties, then Events. If Imaging (or some
equivalent application) is there, check the little box - that will enable the
button on the scanner. Or you can just open Imaging
(start/programs/accessories/imaging) and use the 'file' pull-down to do the
scan.

Now, for some more bells & whistles, you can download DeskScan II from HP's
website. (it's free, and installs easily)

you did not say what OS you are using
if you have XP
it may just pickup and install the scanner

my HP scanner works fine with XP
however the win9x software does not function

Beg to differ with you, Philo, but my SCSI attached HP 5P was picked up &
installed just fine by Win98SE. See my earlier reply to the original poster.

i should have made it more clear...

my win98 software does not function in XP !!!

(i dual boot) if functions great in win98 however
