I was given a perfectly operable HP Scanjet (5 I think) that sat on a

shelf
too long. There were no discs with the unit, and I have had no success in
getting them from HP. Does anyone have any ideas? Since I have the unit
would it be legal for me to copy the software from another owner?

It would be as legal as it is to use any discs that came with it...
you either have a license or don't, the media has nothing to do with
it.
