Installing plextor 716sa, help needed
I have a p4s800d-e deluxe mobo, I recently purchased a plextor 716sa
dvd burner. My hard drive is NOT a SATA hard drive. I can't seem to get it work? Any ideas? I am even considering getting a SATA to IDE convertor just to get it working? I admit i am a bit of a rookie at this. Thanks |

That looks a little like an Asus model designation, perhaps P4P800-E deluxe? There are also P4S800 motherboards (SIS chipset) but I don't remember any of those in a deluxe edition. In any case rumour has it that only Intel chipsets work reliably with optical drives - check your MB manual or the manufacturer's website. If you meant P4P800-E, that MB has two sets of SATA controllers - one Intel, the other Promise. Use the ones next to the ICH5 chip and make sure that the SATA controller is enabled in BIOS and not set to RAID. There are probably other BIOS settings that need to be made, but that's enough guessing for now. |

Yes it is an ASUS board adn it is the named asi mentioned. I looked in
the manual and they are all SiS chipsets. So does that mean i am out of luck for making this dvd drive work with this board? Would i be able to use a Sata to IDE convertor ? Just to get it to work? Oh also i am running win xp with all the updates. Later Craig |

Go into BIOS and see if the drive is being recognized. You must have the
correct SATA controller turned on in BIOS and set to non-RAID. The drive should also be shown during POST. Have you installed a SATA driver in Windows for the controller? The SATA controller should show up in Device Manager, probably as a SCSI controller or the like. "Craig" wrote in message news Yes it is an ASUS board adn it is the named asi mentioned. "Craig" wrote Yes it is an ASUS board adn it is the named asi mentioned. Brain fade on my part. Your board not listed on the localised Asus website, had to go to the global pages to find it. Which BIOS version are you running? 1005 lists a patch for SATA detection. I looked in the manual and they are all SiS chipsets. So does that mean i am out of luck for making this dvd drive work with this board? Doesn't look particularly promising. http://www.plextor.com/English/support/media_712SA.htm http://www.plextor.com/English/suppo...%20listing.htm Would i be able to use a Sata to IDE convertor ? Just to get it to work? Make sure it claims to work with optical drives and preferably the option to return it if it doesn't work. A PCI SATA controller with optical support (if such a thing exists) would be another possibility. Since you obviously have a spare IDE port, is it possible to return the SA and swap it for the A model? Restocking fees vs buying converter/controller? I haven't seen any information on how well converters work especially burning at 16X, you're probably in uncharted waters here. |

I did a lot of research before I tried it. I found a few people reporting success with this drive and the K8N family of mobos but most couldn't get it to work properly. From what I've read, SATA drives and especially SATA optical drives seem to work best on mobos with Intel chipsets. Intel worked on the development of the SATA specs. The chipset makers (VIA, nVidia, SIS, etc.) are in the 2nd or 3rd generation of SATA compatible chipsets but it seems that they are not ready for prime time yet. I returned the SATA for an IDE version which works fine. Chas. |
