Default Disappointment

I recently got a Dell 530 with a Q6600 quad core processor and three gigs of
RAM. Unfortunately, it came with Vista. I use Dragon Dictate for dictation
at work. My E6600 with the same CPU (dual core) speed overclocked to
3.15GHz and two gigs of RAM running Windows XP beats the crap out of it. I
am having a very difficult time creating a duel boot system.

I am contemplating wiping the hard drive and installing XP. Any thoughts?

sorry to hear you bought that crap... er system.
i would wipe it and put xp on it,
if you still dont like it, send it back.

your findings dont surprise me.
i dont like the inspiron desktops.
did you take all the preinstalled crap off it and tune it up?
that system comes with over 70 processes out of the box.
i can tune it down to 40-50.
xp gets tuned down to 20-25.

Blackviper.com is one site that actually explains what each service
does and how each can be configured to minimize services.

Sad, isn't it?

Go into the Device Manager and write down all the hardware you have before
you start. You will need this list when you reinstall XP.

I recently helped to "upgrade" an Inspiron 1721 to XP from Vista Home
Premium SP1. What a difference it made! When everything was said and done,
and the dust had settled, XP was working perfectly with all the hardware on
the system.

Before you do anything, right click on every hard drive in My Computer
and uncheck Index this drive.

That will make a HUGE difference.

Indeed. And a run of ccleaner after uninstalling all of the other crap
won't hurt either.

I think part of the problem is trying to run a "duel" boot system instead of
a "dual" boot system. If you do a "duel" boot system then they will be
fighting each other all the time.

The 'drive indexing' option I attribute to XP.

In Vista, I kill the 'windows search service', which I assume is tied to
Windows desktop search - and is a complete resource pig.
