Default Presario laptop memory compatibility

My laptop is a Compaq Presario 1700 17XL 461 model and originally has
128MB (64MB * 2 slots) on it.

I was trying to upgrade memory and put 256MB memory on one slot.
But the system would not boot and gave the message saying,
"Invalid memory type, Serial Presence Detect, Invalid checksum,
System Halted"

Anybody has an idea about this problem?
I returned 256MB memory and trying to buy another one, but just want
to make sure which memory will work fine for my laptop.
