FireFox: Typing Address NAME ONLY In Address Bar No Longer Works
I posted this question to the Mozilla newsgroup 3 days ago. No replies
I've gotten one response on the Mozilla forum on line but it wasn't what I needed. Hoping someone here might have the answer. I've been using FF for 4 years. I've always been able to just type the name of a url (for example, dell) without having to type the .com or hold the ctrl key while hitting enter....just dell and hit enter. The last few days, if I don't type the (.com) I'm redirected to a Yahoo search page instead of my intended website. FF version is 3.5. I've tried upgrading to FF 3.5.2 (have since reverted back to 3.5). I've cleared cookies and cache/temp internet file. I've done a system restore. I don't have any extra "toolbars" installed. There are no programs in Add/Remove Programs that I don't recognize or that look suspicious. Hijack This report looks good. I've run Malware Bytes, AdAware and Avast. I've started FF in safe mode...no change. There's GOT to be an answer! Anyone? Please?? Monica |

Also wiping out the history, autocomplete has nothing to use to complete. Sounds like you wiped this list clean and now it has to relearn all of your URLs all over again. Also be careful when using Firefox (I would run it under a sandbox environment). As it allows XPCOM and no way to turn it off. This is a huge security risk just like IE with ActiveX. At least ActiveX can be turned off under IE, but XPCOM can only be hacked out by an experienced user. -- Bill Asus EEE PC 702G8 ~ 2GB RAM ~ 16GB-SDHC Windows XP SP2 |

Well, you do have the Yahoo toolbar, is my guess. Some other program
likely installed it. Go into Add/Remove programs and look around. -----Original Message----- From: Monica ] Posted At: Saturday, August 22, 2009 12:18 PM Posted To: alt.sys.pc-clone.dell Conversation: FireFox: Typing Address NAME ONLY In Address Bar No Longer Works Subject: FireFox: Typing Address NAME ONLY In Address Bar No Longer Works I posted this question to the Mozilla newsgroup 3 days ago. FireFox: Typing Address NAME ONLY In Address Bar No Longer Works
No Bill, I hadn't disabled history and I still have a list of previous
websites that drop down from the address bar as well. It doesn't matter if it's a new site or one I'm on every day, if I don't add the (.com) or hold the ctrl key while hitting Enter, it's going to take me to a Yahoo search page. Have NO idea what a "sandbox environment is or XPCOM. Thought I used FF to not have to deal with these security issues. Sounds like it's time for another browser to come along that no one cares to attack (for now). "BillW50" wrote in message ... FireFox: Typing Address NAME ONLY In Address Bar No Longer Works
OK Tom. Where would I find this elusive Yahoo Toolbar? It's not showing on
my browser. It's not listed (nor is any search engine) in Add/Remove Programs. The only program I've installed in the last few months is MalWareBytes. It was installed around the same time this problem started. Can't be sure of the exact time frame. As I noted, I uninstalled it and the problem still existed. Searching my computer for Yahoo brings up three files. Would you mind looking at them and tell me if you see a problem? Thanks, Monica http://www.pbase.com/monicakm/image/116378024 "Tom Scales" wrote in message news:83FA4F7746DA42309CC66ED42B9DC1A3@Tom... Well, you do have the Yahoo toolbar, is my guess. I don't have that add on Bill. Besides, I started FF in safe mode which
should have disabled all my add ons and extensions. It didn't help "BillW50" wrote in message ... And if you had that addon (which does what you want it too), it sounds like it only works for FF v2.xx. So did you update FF recently and now you have these problems? "BillW50" wrote in message ... Frank, I had just been in the about:config area on a tip the keyword.url
string might be the problem. It was set to http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-...ient&gfns=1&q= Did you read that if I complete the address with the usual .com, I'm taken to my intended webpage, for example, dell.com. It's only if I leave off the (.com) that I'm taken to the Yahoo search page. In the 4 years I've used FF, I've never had to type .com or .mil or .edu, etc. While in about:config, I did find some yahoo strings. I've did a screen shot and uploaded it to my pbase gallery. As an experiment, I change each instance of "true" to "false", restarted FF. Didn't fix the problem. Reversed the Yahoo strings to the way I found them. about:config results for Yahoo http://www.pbase.com/monicakm/image/116380010 "Cmplx80" wrote in message ...
