I have a Gateway DX100S desktop computer with 256 MB of memory. I would
like to add at least 1 GB of memory to this system if possible. Can you give me any recommendations please. System has XP. Thanks |

Go to www.crucial.com and put in the specs for your computer, they will
recommend the right memory for it. They are very reliable, guarantee their product and it's reasonably priced. Sunshine wrote: | I have a Gateway DX100S desktop computer with 256 MB of memory. Thanks According to support info on the Gateway web site, the system has an Intel 915 chipset, has two DIMM sockets, and it will support up to 2GB of memory. Memory is DDR2 non-ECC, and speed is either PC2-3200 or PC2-4200 (faster), depending on the processor front side bus. PC2-4200 will work just fine with either the slower or faster processors in this system. I did a Google search for "Gateway DX100S" and turned up this information: http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/DX10...08551sp3.shtml .... Ben Myers |

Thanks Look for free shipping deals on newegg.com zipzoomfly.com or mwave.com and look at the customer reviews for higher rated memory. Determine the optimum memory speed for your processor and add 2 sticks of 1GB memory. You'll be very surprised the first time you start your PC and see how much faster it is. I've had good results using Kingston brand memory and read that Corsair makes good quality memory too.. |

Thanks everyone. I went to Gateway site before ordering memory for the local
PC Repair shop. There they went to Google. Don't know what went wrong, but I have 1 GB of DDR2 PC2-5300 667 MHZ memory stick and it does not work. I take it back on Monday. Thanks for your help. PC2-5300 is not recognized by the Intel 915 chipset on your Gateway motherboard. What went wrong is that your corner PC repair shop person is unfamiliar with Intel 900-series chipsets and sold you memory that is not right for your system. INSIST on PC2-4200 !!! If you really, really, really have a problem finding PC2-4200, let me know. I have a good inventory of DDR2 memory and I can match the price for one stick charged by your local computer store... Ben Myers My path forward was to use Belarc Adviser to look at my GW's followed by Crucial check and order from them. I might have walked into Best Buy and bought memory but online check at Best Buy indicated it would have cost about 5X what I paid at Crucial. OP started out right by coming here, but then she blew it ;( |

Thanks for your help. Adding additional memory is one of the easiest upgrades to do. There is no excuse for the screw-up at your local PC Repair shop, I suggest that you find a different computer shop. Avoid the electronic chain stores that advertise that claim they are the computer repair specialists too . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hxqx4hgeKgQ There are helpful videos on www.youtube.com and excellent information sources online if you would like to learn more about computer upgrades.
