What was wrong with his crosspost asside from it's being a crosspost?

My error this time - and my apologies. It showed up in a second group
without displaying the others.

No kidding! Blame the news server (or reader) again, Mikey?

It was excessively crossposted in my
opinion: a question should go to a single well-chosen group to avoid
repetition, of course, but the OP did crosspost correctly.

Whatever, Mikey.

Anyhow, shouldn't that rant have been all the more reason for you to
slam James Goldman? So, why did you not slam James Goldman for
incorrect crossposting?

Using Notepad (or any other text-editor) for that, was a very,
very bad idea. Text-editors will modify the file in a destructive
way (they think there are line-breaks in there, but that's not
true for a binary file). You should use a hex-editor for that,
which would allow you to change only what you want, not messing up
the whole file. Text-editors are for text-files, not binary
ones. Don't do it again.

I am sorry. Mostly for the fact that the drive is dead and to a
lesser extend, that I did crosspost.

But will we know that Notepad was the source of the problem? Should
I binary compare the files? (and how)

I'm pretty sure that Notepad corrupted the file. Not *absolutely* sure of
course, but text editors usually damage binary files.

There are tools for file comparisons. DOS has one, but I forgot the name
(something like "comp", "fcomp", "fcmp", or something like that). If you
have a Unix, use the "diff" utility.

I have now set follow-ups to "alt.comp.periphs.cdr".

It's "comp" and "fc".

quit. In the binary, using Notepad, I changed the ID string "SAMSUNG

space). Then the tool recognized the writer and started the upgrade
process. But failed after 99%...

http://www.geocities.com/reflash8435/problem.html

Looks like your only way out, is if you can find someone who can
reprogram the EEPROM externally.
That page refers to an 8438E (SW208F)

The rest of the site is interesting tooo, and DOES include coverage
for the 8435 - and most of the other monstrous 843x family that
weren't the expected Plextor rebrand!

SOME drives, have a flashload recovery that can be tripped by various
means (most usually holding EJECT) during power-up, or occasionally by
a jumper on the board which switches an OEM'ed drive back to it's
native personality.

Try holding EJECT at power-on - there might be a reload recovery
function, and it will just do nothing (other than eject the tray -
perhaps) if if there isn't.

Matt, Rui Nikos and others,

Thanks for your help. fc shows indeed that Noepad corrupted the files.
I should hav eknown yes. I know Binary file editors exist. I should
have taken the time to find them.

I have tried the MTKFLASH series of utilities. But failed. I will once
more try to switch of to PIO mode and try again.

Thanks for that link. Funny that the URL holds 8435 (mine is a 8435)
but the story is about a 8438. Apperently from the same monstrous 843x
family. I believe that the SW-208-F equals the 8438 and the SW-208-B
is the 8435. I have both firmwareZ, they both failed.

I will open her up if everything else fails.

I thougth I tried that already. Will try again. I also booted with the
drives power cable disconnected. The minut eyou power it on, the ligth
turns green.
