Default Help! - The dreaded buffer underrun

I have an HP 8200 internal CD writer which does not have underrun
protection.
It works OK under W98 SE using Adaptec/Easy CD etc. It works fine for

data
files, and handled music cds which I first copied to an image file.

Your drive is supported by Feurio, the best audio burning program.
Try it to see if it's a problem with Nero or a hardware problem.

Feurio uses the native WinXP interface to access the drive instead of ASPI
layer, or the Ahead's ASPI layer used by Nero, so it's another problem
avoided by Feurio!

I have now upgraded (dual boot) to XP Home and Nero. Data files still work
fine, but trying to burn from a disk image (.NRG file) of a music cd , I
still get buffer underrun when I write them. I do not run any other
processes while the CD burn is happening. The underrun also occurs in
simulation mode. Reducing the write speed doesn't help (it was only X4
anyway!) Log file follows.

Any suggestions gratefully received - I'm getting fed up rebooting under W98
to burn music cds so otherwise its a new cd writer...

I'm at a disadvantage he I don't run Nero and write CDs only from
SCSI under Win2K. Still, underrun tends to have similar causes
regardless of the system.

1. Check with others on proper configuration of DMA for your drive under
XP and try to establish it. That is one factor which will change when
changing OS.

2. If the underrun occurs at the transition from writing the TOC (I see
that you're using DAO - though that's about all I'm able to translate
from the log), your medium may be too fast for your drive. Finding media
which write well at 4x has become difficult. If only for test purposes,
try a "DigitalAudio" disc; they must write at 1x, so should handle 4x.
If that works, hunt down a line that is acceptable to your drive and to
your purse.

There is a firmware upgrade to 1.0g, but given that Windows and Nero
recognize the writer correctly I would give that a miss.
Nero also reports DMA is correctly applied.

My guess is that you have taken the Nero upgrade a step too far. With Nero
5.5 there were upgrades monthly which often introduced problems as other
were fixed. With older writers, I would have recommended Nero 5580 (which is
the most complete and stable version for the range of writers it will work
with). You can get older versions including 5580 from
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=nero. I am not saying that this will
fix the problem, but it might.

You don't list the details of your PC configuration. As a newbie, you can be
forgiven for such an omission. Since you are using an old burner, I wonder
if your system unit is old as well. Things that work good under Win98 don't
always translate to the same when running WinXp, especially on an older
system. XP needs lots of cpu power and ram to make progs work OK.

I am more or less a Newbie so if I'm not looking in the right place please
feel free to tell me!

I have an HP 8200 internal CD writer which does not have underrun
protection.

It works OK under W98 SE using Adaptec/Easy CD etc. It works fine for

data
files, and handled music cds which I first copied to an image file.

Any suggestions gratefully received - I'm getting fed up rebooting under

W98
to burn music cds so otherwise its a new cd writer...

Thanks

Chris R

Thanks all who replied.

I did try 5580 as per Graham's suggestion but didn't help.

Far as I can tell the underrun always occurs late in the write sequence
which fits with Mike's theory that it might be related to the TOC.

The good news is that Feurio *did* successfully create a music CD for me. I
confess to muddling through the user interface somewhat - also seemed to be
a huge number of warning dialogs and caveats about one thing or another -
but I expect it'll all make sense in time! I don't know what if anything to
conclude about the state of my system but at least I have a way forward now
so thanks!

Any suggestions gratefully received - I'm getting fed up rebooting under

W98
to burn music cds so otherwise its a new cd writer...

Thanks

Chris R

It might be a problem with the busmaster drivers of your mainboard.

Yes, it's a bit confusing at the beginning, but the fastest thing to make
compilations when you know it.
With other programs you make a compilation, burn it and forget it.

Feurio CD-Manager will show your list of compilations ("projects")
inmediately: you don't have to open, or save compilations; they're always
there until you delete them (the structure is kept in a folder anyway if you
need to recover it later).
The only "difficult" step is that you need to press "New" and enter "Artist"
and "Title" to create a compilation.

Feurio CD-Writer is used to make a direct copy of the CD, and is also opened
when you burn a compilation. (HP8200 probably can't READ with index marks
enabled).

You can use the Wave Player or Track Editor to hear the compilation exactly
how it's going to be burned.
