Default Burner won't write

In my time I've installed a few burners and not had any trouble. Now
I've got a friend's PC to fix and I installed his second hand burner.
It would read but it wouldn't write. F

First I tried to burn an image using Acronis True Image v9. It
wouldn't even start.

Then I tried the XP burning software and it went through the motions
but didn't actually burn anything. Same happened with Nero v4.

I bought a new dual layer Liteon and installed it. Same thing. It
only reads.

I thought channel 1 on the host might be the problem, so I installed
the master hard drive on that channel. It booted up perfectly, though
I didn't have time to write to it.

I don't know what to do next.

I've moved a bit closer to the problem now. The Acronis web site says
use InCD to write to the DVD. However, it stresses that the DVD must
be formatted. I've only heard of that in relation to rewriteable
DVD's. I'm not going to use expensive rewriteable for backing up an
image.

Has anyone heard of formatting a once only DVD? How is it done?

Let's start from the beginning. If the old drive is jumpered as CS
(cable select), use CS for the burner instead of Master or Slave. Go
into the bios and check that the drives are recognized. Check the
drives are working properly in Device Manager.

Could you post the link to the Acronis article?

Don't think 'formatting' is your problem, but see if this IBM DLA
supports DVD:

Winxp burn function does not support DVD.
Only Nero 5.5.10.20+ properly supports DVD.

The Acronis page says it only supports DVD/RW, not DVD/R, and that only
with packet writing software.

Your solution is get a "Nero 6 oem suite 3". Think you can get it for
about $10

I am much obliged. Actually I am helping a friend with two computers
and I'm sure that I installed v6 on the other computer.

On the other hand I think the Liteon drive came with Nero 6.6 OEM.
Should that do as well because it isn't working.

If I just download InCD from the Nero site do you think that would get
me out of this mess.

It should. Now you are back to square one. Uninstall Acronis, and run
Nero Clean Tool to uninstall Nero and InCD:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html

Disable IMAPI:
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, double-click "IMAPI CD
Burning", click Stop, then set "Startup type" as "Disabled".

Power down and check:

If the old drive is jumpered as CS (cable select), use CS for the burner
instead of Master or Slave. Double check the data cables are
seated/connected properly.

Go into the BIOS and check that the drives are recognized. Check the

Reinstall only Nero and try burn.

We had a successful burn. Here's what happened.

I backed up an image across the network.

I uninstalled True Image.

I downloaded CleanTool and used it to uninstall nero.

I disabled IMAPI. First it declared service status as "stopped". I
changed it to "Disabled".

The IDE cables were bothnew and 80 pin type. The drive was the only
one on the secondary channel and it was jumpered as master. I changed
it to C/S.

In BIOS the drive was recognised as slave.

I forgot to check that the drivers were ok.

I installed Nero 6.6 for rewritable DVD's (not very sure about what
these precisely are).

I ran Nero and compiled 3 or 4 folders from Windows to burn. I chose
verify after burning.

It looked ok and the data seemed to be on the disk when I checked.

Should ve now install InCD and True Image? Will it burn an image to a
DVD?

Many thanks

Colin
