Default Mac OS X and Joliet

Does anyone know if Mac computers can read Joliet discs?

I burned a CD using Nero Express (yes I only have the cheap version)
which I believe creates Joliet discs. I gave this to a fried of mine
who has a Mac (G4 Powerbook running OS X 10.2) . He could read only
about half of the files on the disc.

Is it because it is in Joliet format? Would his Mac be able to read an
ISO9660 disc properly? Is there another format that I can burn in.

Also, is there another program that I can use thaat allows me to choose
the format of the cd (and can also burn DVDs)?

Thanks a lot, guys.

Is the Nero Express version 7? Are the filenames of the files that are
not read longer than 64 characters? If so, try with names less than 64
chars?

Or, Mac OS X support for Joliet is incomplete or buggy?

Any computer capable of reading a ISO9660 CD-ROM can read Joliet discs
(that's any computer with a CD-ROM drive, by the way).

Joliet is an extension built on top of ISO9660. Even if your computer
doesn't recognize the extensions, it's still an ISO9660 compliant
disc, so it should be readable.

I burned a CD using Nero Express (yes I only have the cheap version)
which I believe creates Joliet discs. I gave this to a fried of mine
who has a Mac (G4 Powerbook running OS X 10.2) . He could read only

Is it because it is in Joliet format?

Shouldn't. The main effect of not recognizing the Joliet extensions
is that long file names get truncated. It can cause problems with
code that looks for the long file names and doesn't take the
truncation into account.

Would his Mac be able to read an
ISO9660 disc properly? Is there another format that I can burn in.

I would hope so. The ISO9660 spec covers CD-ROM, and more recently
DVD-ROM. I'd imagine he's tried a commercial CD-ROM or DVD-ROM in
that computer at some point.

The effect you're describing sounds like what happens if you create a
multi-session disc, and don't import the previous sessions. Did you
create the disc incrementally, putting a little bit of stuff on it at
a time using the multi-session mode? If you don't import the old
session, you might not be able to see the files from the previous
session. I don't recall if Nero does this automatically or not.

I don't own a MAC, but could it be that OSX is hiding some of the
files because of your choice in file extensions? I know WinXP will
hide some files by default if they have certain extensions (eg. .SYS).

Also, is there another program that I can use thaat allows me to choose
the format of the cd (and can also burn DVDs)?

I can't think of any software that deals with formats that Nero won't.
Nero seems to cover its bases pretty well.

Thanks.

Actually, entire directories were hidden not individual files. Files
names being trancated would not have suprised or worried me. This
behavior is odd, though. It doesn't seem to be a file extension
problem either because then the directories would be visible. It's not
a multisession issue either. All files were burned in one session and
the disc was closed.

It's a tough one not least because I'm not sitting in front of the Mac
in question but am trying to debug the problem over the phone.

If you are using Nero Express 7, the default setting is most likely
"long" Joliet that supports filenames longer than 64 chars, the Joliet
limit. Perhaps Mac OS X Joliet support does not handle the Joliet
extension.

Try DeepBurner which I think only support 'regular' Joliet and see if
your friend still has problems:
