You're using a cable with a twist ?! - sheesh - that's gotta be 20+
years old.
Borrow a floppy cable from another Pc for 10 minutes and :
check the jumper on the drive ( master/slave- is there one on there ??)
and use the borrwoed( known good) cable - can you see drive now ?

Can't switch cables, Bob; ones with 17-pin connectors are hard to come
by. I'd thrown all of mine out. This one was mailed to me by a friend
from another newsgroup.

I found a jumper block on the bottom of the TEAC 5.25" drive, with the
jumper on DS1. I tried booting with no jumper, DS0, and DS2, and they
all resulted in no floppy drive at all being installed. Only DS1 shows
one as existing, and it shows up as a 1.44M 3.5".

I didn't forget you John. It's just that I have boxes and boxes of old
cd's / books and looking for that era. I did find volume 2 of Compaq's Jan
2000 Service Guide - ... and the index tells me that the info for a
Presario 4100/4400 is in Volume 1 ! Still looking..

The Compaq Presario 4122 was purchased new on January 4, 1997.

WHERE are you hooking up the IDE cable for the floppy drive?

There are two adjacent sockets on the MB. One of them is used for a
cable to the hard disk and CD-ROM drive. The cable that was plugged
into the other socket ran only to the 3 1/2" floppy drive. I just
unplugged that one, and plugged in the cable to my 5 1/2" drive.

If you're dealing with first generation pc ( 8080 cpu),

The 4122 uses a 150MHz Pentium CPU.

I suspect that
the original Pc had a controller card for that hi-density 5/25"
floppy.

Is 360K considered "hi-density"? I know they came in 180K too, but I'd
think 720K would be "hi-density" and I don't have one of those.

Ok, in 1997 that Pc should now about your type floppy.
( Your drive IS set for MASTER ?) I'm reaching ...
Power off. Disconnect the floppy cable at the motherboard.
With no floppy hooked up - power up.
NOTE the BIOS date /version.
Now go into BIOS.
NOW can you choose your type as an option ? ( just checking - bad
drive/setting etc. )

It will take me a while to find them, but I have old Compaq service CD's
(service Tech) ... maybe some info there ( manual ? ). I'll look in the
next few days. I remember having to INSTALL the CD's ( back in Win95
timeframe) so not sure if I can just browse/pull up info I want in XP.

Sorry - can't find that one CD.
I'll look some more but don't be waiting for me. When/if I find it, I'll
reply again.

Thanks, Bob! I'm just about ready to give up and trash this thing (not
the floppy drive, but the 4122). I've only been keeping it because I
thought the 5.25" drive might work in it. I guess my next stop is my
other oldie, a HP Pavilion that came with Windows 98.
