Yeah, Adobe is silent on the video card...

hard
drive of the original machine and several components - video card
included.

Did the shop tell you this? If so, they are talking out of their
assholes. A virus cannot do physical damage to hardware.

yes it can, in very rare circumstances, and not knowing what virus he had,
means it could be possible. However killing the circuitry or motors in the
drive is very unlikely.

Nitpicking. When way the last time you heard of a virus causing a head crash
or similar?

I think your drive was just dying,

Indeed

All they needed to do was reformat and reinstall your XP and apps.

not on a dead HD

We don't know for 'sure' its was actually dead, do we?

Now sorry to you and everyone to be so ignorant, but how do you figure
out
what sort of parts you need for the purposes I use the machine for? What
would be a good video card for the sorts of operations I do? And are
there
any other requirements such a computer would need? I will get full spec
of
both machines in the morning so thanks everyone for replies and
patience.

you don't need a expencive video card

I didn't spec an expesive one.

you don't need core duo

Maybe not, but it wouldn't hurt, would it? Especially as the o/p is running
Cubase as well as Photoshop

you dont NEED 2 gigs of ram, it wouldn't hurt

And Photoshop/Cubase will run better for it.

MONITOR most important

Got nothing to do with it. The monitor in this case will just be down to the
personal preference of the user and what he's comfortable with.

PRINTER second

Do what?

external HD for backup of your art/pictures

Not a bad idea.

I was doing photoshop, illustrator and video rendering on a PIII 850 and
before me 486's 64megs ram- 386's -286's

Irrelevant, you presumably will have been using a much earlier vervion of
Photoshop as well, with much lower requirements.

As to the spec I gave being overblown (see my additional post below), it all
depends what you are happy with and how fast you want your system to work,
doesn't it? You also conveniently overlook any mention of Cubase, which can
be another resource hog, especially if you have multiple VST's running.

THe hard drive was dead.
I sent it to recovery specialists - they couldnt get the drive to spin nor
could they access it for the data that was on there.
They offered me a forensic service for data recovery at £2000 but with me
backing it all up I declined.
I took that as proof of a dead hard drive.

Yup, don't get much deader than that! Unless the data is life or death, or
loss of it will lead to financial ruin, it's rarely worth paying for the
full recovery process.
At least you had a backup :-)

Cheers
