-r need finalising but apparently +r don't. I say apparently as my
machine insisted on me adding something to them before it would say
they were complete so it was just the same as finalising to me. so,
basically, try a small batch of +r

If two people had the same table top dvd recorder you wouldn't need to
finalize the disc. Yes you need to finalize dvd-r and dvd+r dvd's. Only
DVD-RAM you don't have to finalize. It is possible to read a dvd-r or
dvd+r dvd with software. NTI cd and dvd-maker platinum suite will do it.
The dvd-r disc will show all the tracks that were recorded the dvd+r
disc will only show one track but everything can be extracted. Reading
the disc as an iso file then changing the extention from .iso to .mpg if
it's something recorded off of tv will work. If it's constant rate all
you do is change the extention. If it's variable rate you need to use
something like quickstream fix in VideoReDo Plus.

i know about the same model working etc. - i test mine in a same brand
player only and it objects if not finalised

software info is useful to know for a disaster situation
so it looks in normal day to day life that you have to finalise dvd-r &
dvd+r

any idea on the r/w ? as some early dvd recorders use this format

thanks

Finalise the session, but not the disc. Same for all CDs and DVDs.

r/w is just the re-useable version of r.

When you are finished with a recording, you can erase (initalize) the
disk and re-use it a hundred times (some advertising says 1000 times).

I normally only use dvd-r/w for tv recordings and cd-r/w for computer
backups. Of course, once in a while I will use just cd-r or dvd-r for a
special reason.

A particular recorder may or may not allow recording of r/w discs. Refer
to the specification page in the user manual.

With DVD+-R/RW in DVD-Video mode, DVD+RW is the only format not
requiring finalization. But even DVD+RW needs to be finalized if any
"edit" is done to make it what they call "making edits compatible".
