Replacing an OEM Mobo...

My Sony Viao PCV-RX360DS (UC28554430) came with an Asustek CUSL-LV
Rev. 1.xx mobo and a 40 GB ST340823A Rev. 3.07 hard drive.

Can anyone comment on the compatibility of replacing the OEM hard
drive with a 250 GB WDC WD2500BB 55GUC0 Rev. 08.02D08 hard drive?

That appears to be a parallel ATA drive. I can't really find much on
the mobo.

That's a parallel drive as well? The WD2500BB comes in serial and
parallel versions.

Assuming that it's a parallel drive, you should be alright. If for some
bizarre reason this Pentium III machine did not support LBA-48, you
would not be able to address more than 128GB of your new drive, but I
think that's unlikely.

The Asus motherboard is new enough that there should be no problem using
a 250GB PATA drive... Ben Myers

replacing the old 40gb 3.5" parallel ata drive with another of a larger
capacity should not be a problem. however, you should make sure that you
have a 40pin/80 wire ide cable and there is a chance that your system will
not natively recognize the full capacity of the new larger drive. if you
purchase a new drive as an 'oem' package then you get just a bare drive, but
if you purchase it in a 'retail' package you will get the drive, the cable,
utility cd and instructions. the newer/larger drives need the newer cable
to work correctly. the cable looks very similar to the old but with twice
as many wires running thought the ribbon cable. i have not seen the western
digital drive you mentioned available for sale for some time so suspect you
are talking about a used one. either way, you can get the utility software
from the cd that is included with the drive or from the drive manufactures
web site. among other things, the utility software allows you to clone the
software image from the current drive to the new (so you do not need to
reinstall any software), and to enable the system to be able to recognize
the full capacity of the drive if you find that your computer is not able to
'see' the full capacity of the drive.

Newegg carries wd ide drives from 80 to 500 gig,new oem. $39 to $73

I haven't looked up the specs for the board, but as long as the BIOS can
handle the larger drive size you should be fine as long as both drives
are the same interface (PATA/SATA).
