Abit NF7-S and 2 x 512MB PC3200 - Which DIMM slots? Having problems....

Hey All,

According to the manual, DIMM Slot 1 is the one closest to the CPU, correct?

The manual says to use the memory slots from 3-1 in that order and suggests
that when using two DDR PC3200 modules that you should put the memory in
slots 3 and 2. But when I do this, the machine will not POST.

If I put the modules in slots 1,2 the machine boots, but I can not run the
bus at 200, only at 166.

I am using Crucial PC3200. Any BIOS settings that I need to be aware of?

By using slots 1 & 2, you are using one memory channel. Try slots 1 &
3.

1:1 is fine. 6:6 is the same thing.

What multiplier are you using? Have you lowered the multiplier to see
if the system will run at 200 MHz FSB at a lower CPU frequency?

It may be you need to increase the memory voltage (Vdimm) in the BIOS.
Many memory modules need 2.6v to 2.8v to run properly.

1:1 is fine. 6:6 is the same thing.

One more thing. If you are trying to overclock the CPU, it will require
a higher core voltage to run at faster speeds also.

The manual for this motherboard says the following:

"There are three memory module sockets on the system board (for a total of 6
banks)."

I read that to mean each socket is two banks for two channels of DDR. I
don't think you have to put the memory in sockets 3 and 1. Each socket has
two DDR channels on it. Or am I wrong???

Absolutely wrong. There are two *banks* of memory on the module. Not
channels, banks. Socket 1 and 2 are hard wired to channel 1 and socket
3 is hardwired to channel 2. To run dual *channel*, you must have
modules in slots 1 & 3, or 2 & 3, or 1,2 & 3.

OK, I stand corrected. That makes more sense, but the manual doesn't make
sense.

Probably a problem with the board, case when you put the sticks into 3 and 2
you have Dualchanell enabled. Why don't you take xour board and teh memory
sticks backto the store.
