Default Computer bios does not detect hard drive

I have a Micron Millennia, 450 M Proc/ 128M ram, circa 1999, Samsung
Voyager 6 Plus 8.4GB hard drive (all hardware and op sys original).
Recently, when booting, the pc will rarely detect the hard drive
(primary master), and cd-rom (secondary master) and proceed to load
Win 98SE just fine. Most times it fails to detect the hard drive but
still sees the cd-rom. I substituted with known good hard drive but
problem persists. Also unplugged cd-rom from secondary ide controller
and plugged hard drive into this port to eliminate the controller as
the culprit. Still can't see the hard drive as secondary master.
Anybody have a suggestion??

Sounds like your motherboard is failing.

Couple of suggestions:

1). Go into the BIOS and 'detect the hard drive' and save the
settings, so that the BIOS is not set to Auto, and does not have to
search for the drive each time the machine starts.

2). Update the BIOS so that it can detect more recent hard drives.

Best regards
Peko

Try a new ribbon cable.
