Quite CPU Cooler for Opteron Socket F (Socket 1207) w/ Tyan n6650W mobo
It's been a while since I built built my PC and it's about time for an
upgrade. I plan on building a dual processor Opteron system based on the Tyan n6650W motherboard. I am planning on installing only one CPU at this time (an Opteron 2210). I'll wait for the quad-core Opterons later this year and then put two of them in this system. I am not planning on overclocking. The biggest problem I've run into - finding a quite & good CPU cooler for this system. There are coolers available, but they're 55 dB or more. Yuck! The Cooler Master Mars is supposed to work, but the reviews for it are marginal at best & it does not come with a backplate. I'm worried about damaging a $400+ mobo (not to mention the CPU) with a poor cooler. Any suggestions? K ------- It's about time to replace those P-III's |

K ------- It's about time to replace those P-III's I assume that you already know that the Socket F does not take one fan/heat-sink type, but there are two different ones depending on the motherboard? I just built a server on a tyan s3992 with an amd opteron 2218 - as you are doing, I used only 1 processor, and will put in another one after the prices drop. I used the Zalman cnps 9500, which is labelled for the AM2, but works with the tyan sized, socket F (I assume that the n6650 takes the same hsf size, but you might wish to double check - there isn't much written about this). The zalman seems quiet, but since it's in a server with 4 15K SAS drives, I really didn't care about the cpu fan noise. The zalman is large, however. Luckily, I didn't get two as it will only fit on the 1st processor slot with my lian li case (powersupply on the bottom). In the second processor slot it will interfere with the full-size pci-e raid card that I have. Even in that 1st processor slot, the zalman would have interfered with the tyan add-in sas/scsi controller card if I had one. I'm not sure about the backplate information. The tyan board had warnings about not installing the processor until after installing the backplate, but the backplates on my board were already installed, and the threaded screw inserts that hold the hsf are on the backplate, so I can't see how it's even possible to install without the backplate. ...perhaps they had problems with this and decided to start installing these backplates at the factory? So, you might check about that backplate thing. ...as far as I know, that comes with the MB and not the hsf. Jeff -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
