Default Xp Pro keeps dropping `off-line´

I've recently installed Xp Pro on a Dell 670 and it seems to drop
off-line after so many minutes of wide-area inactivity. There are
pop-up boxes that advise to "go online" or "try again" but not
sure if these are official Windows messages. Is this behavior
normal? If not, then now to remedy?

Ed,
Try the following if you have HSI Cable connection.
1. Control Panel System Hardware tab Device Manager Network adapter
Right click the adapter listed there Properties Power Management tab
Clear the box to "Allow the device to be turned off when Idle to save power."
If that does not work:
2. Go to the Dell site and make sure that latest drivers for your Network
adapter (Ethernet connector). After installing the update, if needed. Repeat
Step#1.

Your ISP may be acting up also. So you might try, after turning off your PC,
unplugging the power cord from the back of the modem. Wait a minute or so.
Reconnect modem's power cord. Let it complete the start up process. Then restart
PC. And see if the connection still drops out, when idle. If you still have
problems you might need to contact your ISP, and have a tech come out and see if
you signal problems in your cable. If you are using DSL, I would contact their
tech support, after doing steps 1 & 2 listed above.

It's a tower case.

It's an integrated 10/100/1000 Intel PRO/1000 I believe.

Thought the problem was solved.. but it dropped off-line aGaiN last
night. Starting up a new browser session restores the connection.

I'll go through all of the procedures you have above this weekend.

maps,
If you are using Comcast for your HSI, you might have to do this every so often.
Here in SE Michigan, I sometimes have to power down the modem (Motorola SB5120),
same three (3) or four (4) days every month. I think they are updating the
modem, and the modem needs to be rebooted for the update. But it does not do it
automatically, so I manually reboot it, but when it happens they swear its not
them.

If you have not done it, you might consider calling your ISPs tech people, and
schedule an appt for them to check signal strength on your line. I know Comcast
will start charging a service fee for the maintenance on the cable that is
installed in your home, that was previously free of charge.

This sounds very much like what one of my home computer customers is
experiencing with Comcast, simply losing the internet connection. He
has gotten used to the drill of unplugging the cable modem and the
router, plugging them back in. On the possibility that it might be the
router, I replaced his router yesterday.

With Charter here in another town (Massachusetts has legislated the
gerrymandering of cable TV, hence cable internet), I have not had the
same sort of problem... Ben Myers
