No POST with Shuttle SS51G
Hi. I just bought a Shuttle SS51G, RAM, Processor, etc. through
NewEgg and put it together. Unfortunately, I'm getting no POST. The Power LED on the front of the case lights up, the fan and drives spin, and the LED on the system board lights up. However, I don't get any video output. There isn't a PC speaker built into this system board, so I can't hear any beeps. I will never underestimate the value of a PC speaker again! The System Board is a Shuttle FS51 version 2.0. The processor is an Intel Celeron D Processor 320 (2.40 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 256K L2 Cache). The RAM is Geil GE5123200BDC (two matched 256 MB sticks, PC3200, DDR400, CL=2.5-8-4-4). I currently have no drives hooked up and I'm using the built-in video port. I researched the news groups and found that this is a classic scenario for this particular unit. It looks like the system board very particular about the RAM modules. I've done the clearing of the CMOS procedure several times. I followed the procedures in the "FS51 Mainboard Manual" on page 27. Out of desperation, I even tried draining it for 45 minutes instead of a few seconds, but it hasn't helped. I've reseated the processor. I've reseated the RAM. I've swapped the RAM modules between the sockets. I've tried using only one RAM module at a time (trying each module in the DIMM1 socket at different times). Unfortunately, I don't have any other alternate DDR modules here at work, believe it or not. I'm going to take the unit home tonight and swap with some modules that I have there. I have the following RAM types at home that I can try: Kingston, Hyper X, 256 MB, PC2700, CL2 (KHX2700K2/512) Kingston, ValueRAM, 256 MB, PC2100, CL2.5 (KVR266X64C25/256) Does anybody see anything obviously wrong with my current RAM, CPU, and System Board combination? I know that this system board is not supposed to be compatible with the Prescott core. I don't know what core my Celeron D Processor 320 uses. I went to www.intel.com and looked at the specifications for the Celeron D Processor 320 but was unable to find the actual core listed. Does anyone know what core the Celeron D Processor 320 uses? sounds like the video may maybe disabled or kaput. can you get a PCI
vid card and check? you mentioned classic scenario..do these same folks offer a fix bios update? .that would also be an indication of a bad choice of MB. "Van Vangor" wrote in message om... Hi. Obvious thing to check , but are you using the TV out connector on the back? My shuttle SK41 does (that is why I bought it). But that is not enabled by default in the bios. If you have it connected to a TV, then you will have to plug it into a monitor first and enable TV out! |

I don't think the Celeron D processors work with that board. Check to be

Yep, I am pretty sure its the Celeron D giving you problems.
I just happen to be building 2 more systems as we speak based on the SS51G. As I was looking at the docs again I think I am pretty sure that the SS51G just does not support the 533 FSB of the Celeron D processors. So far I have built up 3 using 2.4Ghz celerons and 1 using a 2.26Ghz P4, these are the first small form machines I have ever dealt with and I think they are just great, I think they will gain even more popularity over time. Cheap too, a pretty sweet complete box with total cost being about $450. I really should benchmark 2 identical systems with the only difference being 2.4Ghz cele. vs 2.26Ghz p4. --Dan "dg" wrote in message m... I don't think the Celeron D processors work with that board. Thanks for the reply. That was a good idea. It has an 8X AGP slot,
so I installed a Sapphire Radeon 9000Pro in the AGP slot, but got the same results. Then I tried a Saphire Radeon 7000 video card in the PCI slot, but still got the same results. By the way, both video cards work fine in another system. Thanks for the input. Actually, the SS51G doesn't have a TV Out connector. I've been using the standard, 15-pin, VGA connector. Sorry for the late reply! Again, thanks for your detailed info. The problem was that the Celeron D processors aren't compatible with the Shuttle SS51G. The Celeron D 320 has a Prescott core. I sent it back to NewEgg and paid a 15% restocking fee. I'm just happy that I didn't have to eat the whole thing. I ordered a Pentium 4 with the following specifications, instead: Speed: 2.26 GHz FSB: 533 MHz L2 Cache: 512 KB Co Northwood Prod Code: BX80532PE2266DSL7V9 New Egg Link: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...116-141&depa=0 This is the same P4 you used, except I ordered it before I saw your post. Anyway, the P4 worked like a charm as you already knew.
