Today Smoky Mountain Writer commented courteously on the
subject at hand Thank you for taking time to reply. I've tried Roxio 7.5. Recording in CD-RW goes smoothly, but when I make changes and click on save, I get the message "This is a read only file. Word cannot save, or create a new file." I tried "Save as" and get the same message. Any suggestions on how to overcome this? XP changed previous practice which is to copy a CD file to HD with its Read-only bit set. When I load from a CD or DVD on my older SP1 box or newer SP2 PC, they are saved with the bit reset so that it can be saved to again. This default behavior can be changed globally in Windoze but isn't adviseable for the reason you state. Meanwhile, right-click on the file name(s) you wan to fix, choose Propeties, and uncheck Read-only, then OK. You will then be able to save from Word. Save As is intended for creating a new file, so if you'd changed the name, it would've worked OK. -- ATM, aka Jerry "Whether You Think You CAN Or CAN'T, You're Right." – Henry Ford |

I tried "Save as" and get the same message. Any suggestions on how to overcome this? I think what happens is that when files are stored on cd they are marked as read only. You could try checking that on each file on the drive, see if it helps CD-R, vs. RW, by definition are write-once read-only affairs and since they cannot be written to again, Windoze marks the files Read-only. The "R" means "read" while "RW" means "read and write". This cannot be fixed on the discs but can be on the files loaded onto a HD, but my two XP machines reset the bit. oups.com... I need to save documents from Microsoft Word and Pagemaker on a CD-RW, then be able to use the CD in another computer, make changes, and save back to the same CD. Who can tell me what software to buy to do this? I could do this with Easy CD Creator 5 but it is not compatible with Windows XP Pro which I have now. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me solve this prolixing problem. Perhaps it's not feasible in your situation, but I would think a "Thumb or Jump" Drive would be more applicable to what you want to do. The prices have dropped drastically on 512kb and 1gb drives, and you wouldn't need any CD writing software. I am, of course, assuming that the computers you're using have USB ports. David -- You are exactly right, I have one and love it. However, with great difficulty in getting drivers I managed to get it to work on two win98se installations. So far I can't get it to work on wife's older win98se machine, installs but crashes when I plug the thing in. Luckily my CF card reader works fine so I can use that. But yes, these little buggers are marvellous. To think I paid $200 for a zip drive and $50 for three disks. But I was happy at the time. All Things Mopar squeaked: But, learn from my /really/ serious mistake - do /not/ try to read discs burned with anybody's UDF in SP2, it /will/ crash it to a BSOD! Don't you play DVD video on your winxp/sp2? I don't watch any movies on my PC, that isn't what it is for, so I don't know if DVDs using any incantation of UDF crashed my system. However, as I stated earlier, I traced the BSOD bull**** to 3 errant .sys files store in c:\windows\system32\drivers as I recall. Once these 3 files were removed, everything has worked A-OK. -- ATM, aka Jerry "Whether You Think You CAN Or CAN'T, You're Right." – Henry Ford |
