Haven't yet (there's an HDMI connection, but no DVI). There was a time when I would have exhausted every possibility in tracking down the cause of the problem. And I'm thinking that could involve the OS, motherboard along with settings and drivers, video card with drivers and cables, and the monitor itself. But I've reached a point now where I'm satisfied just to take the easiest path that keeps the problem from showing up. And that seems to be leaving the monitor turned on. No bother and almost no added cost. Larc |

Monitor advice

This is a bit off topic, but I have a question that should benefit from answers here. My main computer is usually turned on shortly after I get up in the morning and not shut down until just before I go to bed at night. I've also been turning off the monitor, but am wondering if it would be better -- or at least no worse -- to just leave it on. If too much of Windows loads before I switch it on, some visual settings are affected. I'd like to avoid chances of that by leaving it on. Specs show my monitor draws only 0.5W in sleep mode, which is only 0.2W more than it draws when turned off. Are there any significant negative factors in leaving it on? I've always left all of my monitors on stand-by, never even notice the difference from turning it off. Yousuf Khan -- Sent from Giganews on Thunderbird on my Toshiba laptop |

I'm pretty much situational, nor is my idea of a desktop going to be compulsory for running diagonal vectors over, pushing a hundred icons arranged for comprising lines, as general class-function identity lines through a couple folders. Best way for keeping them that way, my peace of mind, though, when Windows does its 52-pickup trick and rearranges them. As I said, it's a potential and condition of creative desktop environments, an unavoidable snafu, no retrieval software delves into, even if more so retrievable in locating the folders elsewhere (& paired with a binary OS backup). It's hard to say how long he'll be able to take it, having Windows rearrange the meticulously constructed desktop each time it can't understand a 4K's synchronization scheme. Best one can do is think up the permutations with what's given to work with. Just learned more of that while messing around with a new mb/PCI-Evideoboard setup, as well as better results (from earliest HDMI connection interface) than, I'm now curious, if to have mistakenly shot the feet out from this new Radeon series chipped MB. Won't know until I supercede that HDMI for a more modern DMI alternative, go out and purchase the cable, for what the MB also sports, to compare both. |

Larc Neither much difference even if I turn it off -- rather in an off "phantom-state", as opposed to actual standby, where the 115V plug is out of the wall, pulled, for things that happen -- losing user presets or all the collected channels from a feed search and retrieval routine and saved into a volatile memory state, clocks and such, that the phantom state reason is to keep coherent (on some models). Internet is a different beastieboy. In a software-engaged standby state, a monitor connected here may be triggered on through the state of the OS, remotely over usually prolonged usage/connection time (between OS binary restorations). Which I've found to be the case when it reawakens from a off-state (LCD tubes software disconnected and un-lit) -- later to find it as if self-possessed and lighting up a dark room -- not at all something possible, at least hasn't been a single instance yet over the past twenty years since paying $800 for Olivia Syntax 232-S12, once the power-off button is hardwire/RF engaged. |
