epson perfection 2580 photo scanner

anyone have this scanner.Is it a good scanner.what is the pros/cons

I've had one for about 15 months. I use it with Windows 2000. It installed
without any problems. It uses USB only, and I installed a USB 2 card (about
$22) specifically for it rather than use the USB 1 ports on my computer. I
don't really know how much speed difference this made because I never used
it with USB 1.

Overall, I find it's ok, I'm happy with it. I don't use the Epson software
that came with it very much, except of course its driver. I prefer the
software that came with my much older (now retired) Acer scanner, Ulead
I-Photo Plus 4. But that's probably just me not wanting to change. The
bundled Abby FineReader OCR software is accurate.

I found almost from the start, that 35mm film negative strips would
continually jam when inserted into the automatic loader, until I pulled it
apart and removed what looked like teflon strips on the two metal guide
rails. Seems the sharp film edges when loading had cut small nicks where
the film path turns, and caused the jamming. I haven't had any problem
since removing them.

I rarely use the scanner for better than 300dpi, but when I do, I'm very
happy with it. For example all of my old 35mm b&w wedding proof sheets when
scanned at 1200dpi will produce quite acceptable 4" x 6" prints from each
frame (not that I print my old wedding photos very much anymore :-) ).
Couldn't say the same with 300dpi.

I don't use it's integrated buttons for calling programs because that's the
way I prefer to use it.

Would I buy one again? I'd probably look at all the features available now,
like I did with this one, and see what best suits my needs now. I wanted to
scan both 35mm negs and transparancies occasionally and this does it quite
acceptably.

I did a search of the 2580 manual and deskew came up with nothing.

Colour deskew option will take a scanned image
and automatically correct its alignment, for example
if you put a photograph under the scanner at a wonky angle.

Most scanners deskew black and white via the OCR option
colour deskew refers to colour images scanned.

Thanks for the explanation. That function does not seem to be obviously
available in the Epson software, but as I mentioned earlier I still use the
software (ULead iPhoto Plus) from my old ACER scanner which does have it (a
tab called "Straighten"). I know it's old, but I still like it.

However to satisfy myself I looked again at the Epson "driver software".
The bit that imports into the ULead software. It has three modes 1) Full
Auto, 2) Home and 3) Professional. In the Full Auto and Home modes, it
crops and staightens a colour photo automatically. So I guess the aswer is:
Yes!, it does have the auto colour deskew :-))

But there are no actual user controls for it that I could find. I normally
use the Professional mode and it doesn't seem to be available there.
