Default [Q:]Question about Defragmenting Data Safe HDs

I've got the Dell XPS400 with the 500gb data safe drive (2 drives in an
array in one)

1. When I defragment the C drive, does it also defrag the mirrored hard
drive as well? Or, is there something I have to do to defragment it
seperately?

2. Does the D drive (where norton ghost saves its backup) have to be
defragmented seperately? Should It be defragmented at all?

RAID1 as you have, the drives should be seen separately in "my computer",
and therefore should be maintained generally as such.

If I remember correctly, Ghost 10 / Data Safe /RAID1 defaults to setting
"incremental" backup images to your D:\ drive (someone here might be able to
confirm or refute this if they have a similar configuration).

If that is the case, I don't believe that defragging of your D:\ drive would
be either needed or advisable. In any event, I'm guessing that Windows would
analyze the drive and report that defragging isn't necessary (given normal
backup via DataSafe).

lol.......damn. Just damn.

I thought RAID0 appeared as one drive listing total capacity of both, and
that RAID1 would show both. No? What does it show, 1 drive with the other
completely hidden?

Things are not ideal my man. But a ****ed off redneck doesn't know how to
give up a fight.

Thanks for asking, btw.

PS - you suck.

Normal viewing (e.g., in My Computer) only shows one drive. If you think about
it, that probably makes sense. The only time a user has to access the second
drive is when the first one craps out.

I've heard of people purchasing RAID1 systems to act as a software-backup drive,
which is rather dumb. The only thing they're good for is getting up and running
quickly, after a hardware failure... If the OS or programs become corrupt or
infected, so does the data on the mirror drive.

Here's a shot of my RAID1 drives, using EVEREST Home Edition:

My (non-denominational) prayers are with ya, buddy.

Take care!

Huh. Is that an onboard Promise or a PCI controller card?

Yeah, thinking about it, I can see where it would make sense to "hide" the
mirrored drive to minimize chance of user error or fiddling with it.

I do mirror my drive, but it's unlikely I'd try to do so with it damaged,
infected, or unbootable. One might hope that a user would have enough sense
to maintain the boot drive/OS and disable any backup until the problem(s)
was cleared.

But we know that doesn't always happen.

Mine's a "Promise FastTrak Serial ATA RAID Controller Card."

Thought perhaps so. I've a Promise SATAII card I've been meaning to install
for a couple of months in a non-SATA machine of mine.

Anyway, I neglected to say I hope you and yours are well, LG - and I surely
do.

Default [Q:]Question about Defragmenting Data Safe HDs

Interesting Banter S.Lewis and Notan, but neither have actually answered my
question yet.

I've got a C drive and a D drive in my computer.
The D drive is a partition of the C drive which is where Norton Ghost writes
it's backup.

The mirrored Hard drive is invisible, and I'm assuming looks just like the
C/D drive ( hence, the mirror.)

The original question I had was... if I defragment my C (and or/ my D
drive,) would the mirrored drive also be defragmented? If not, how do you
defragment a mirrored hard drive?

Thanks.
