Older Packard Bell (Build date 1998) USB port question.
I have a PB system that I purchased in 1998 that has a USB 1 port that I was wondering if it could be upgraded to USB 2 by just installing new drivers or whatever. I am no computer whiz keep in mind. I love my PB and would love to get another one but they do not sell them in the USA anymore!! I am thinking of getting new system and giving this to kids / grandkids to use til it drops dead. Before I do I would like to see if the USB drivers could simply be upgraded to version 2 without putting a lot of money into them in replacing cards and such. Thanks for the help. |

Older Packard Bell (Build date 1998) USB port question.
USB 1.0 is a built-in hardware limitation on earlier Pentium and Pentium II
systems. But you should be able to get an inexpensive USB 2.0 card to install. However, be advised that USB software support on older Windows 98 is a bit sketchy.... Thanks for the help. Will check into version 2 cards and see what cost is and how much work is involved. Older Packard Bell (Build date 1998) USB port question.
Make sure that any USB 2 card you get has software drivers for whatever
operating system version you are running. Installation is pretty easy. Unplug from the wall, open up the case. Look for a free PCI slot. Remove the slot cover for for free slot, insert card and secure it with a screw. After that, install drivers and go... Ben Myers On Fri, 16 Feb 2007 20:52:35 -0500, kraut wrote: Thanks for the help.
