Do you mean a free AV to monitor RAM and scan any file that is
accessed/opened using a downloadable/updatable database or something
that uploads all your file hashes(and sometimes files), emails and
browsing links to government-funded corporations ?
If the former, I don't think they exist anymore. They were
true AV apps. The latter make more money selling your personal info
that from selling licenses. If you don't believe me , read the TOS.

The real installer is he

Almost 400MB. WOW !!!!

I got disenchanted with Kaspersky sticking his stick into my spokes
and thought I'd try the 400MB AVG download. When run get "not a valid
Win 32 Application".

A rescue CD will scan any OS, and cannot be blocked by
rootkits, because you set it as the boot system in BIOS.
They are usually large downloads .... and include the latest
AV sig files.

Kaspersky makes a good one. You don't need an Internet
connection to run it, in fact, I recommend you unplug the network.

https://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/krd18

You can either burn it to a DVD or to a USB (use freeware
Rufus in ISO mode for that).

PS Last Rufus to run under XP was version 2.18

http://rufus.ie/downloads/

Prefer the portable version.

I don't know if I have the willpower to test all of these, but the
file is smaller on this one for some reason.

https://www.pcmobitech.com/avg-free-...download-link/

The one from AVG was: avg_antivirus_free_setup_offline.exe 361,733,320 bytes

WinXP x86 (pcm...com) AVG_Antivirus_Free_x86_694.exe 289,597,368 bytes
Vista x86 (pcm...com) avg_antivirus_free_setup_offline.exe 361,733,320 bytes
Vista x64 (pcm...com) avg_antivirus_free_setup_offline.exe 361,733,320 bytes

So it looks like the file Shadow found is a Vista version, according
to the pcmobitech site (and the labels on their downloads).

I'm guessing that '694 one is the one you want. "WinXP x86" button.

For Windows XP:

Download 32 Bit Version-

That's usually one of the three XP variants (SP1-3), the last being
the DOTNET and some significance to a shift towards I'd assume W7.

Such proprietary software cases, I've personally encountered with
hardware computer extensions -- namely music gear of possible dollar
value for signal-chaining instruments, recording purposes and such --
I might have take it to the latest Microsoft OS installs.

Fresh. No kidding monkey-business. When a 3rd-party hardware
manufacturer places its latest chip-driven soundFx wonders, the
developmental team responsible is competing with a handful of similar
marketing strategies.

Equality. Which they're not, other than presumably not waiving your
right to consumer protection laws for products, after testing and
evaluating, on your time, to a reasonable expectation and claim of
unmarketable sustainability, for "your money back".

Time's up. Once up and running on the OS platform, clock begins
ticking down on whether that product is all of what they said you
could possibly think it would be. (Unless its a movie that caused
your brain to become sick, and you can't get your money back. Or
software, depending, in some cases on how contractual agreements are
initially presented for your perusal.)

-
Disclaimer: I've never run AV software;- nopers, would touch it with a
bargepole, even if you gave me one free.

And you found the real download links. The Offline installer
was too obfuscated to debug.

The Trojan (AKA online installer) AVG offers on their XP page
is also a C++ Visual Studio 2015 [ Win Vista ] executable.(According
to ExeinfoPE]. I didn't try running it.

hxxps://install.avcdn.net/avg/iavs9x/avg_antivirus_free_setup.exe

The main download server inside the executable is
"shepherd.avcdn.net", which is rather appropriate.
Guess who the "sheep.avcdn.net" are ?

For Windows XP:

Download 32 Bit Version-

//AVG Free Antivirus 2019 is best free Antivirus solution for your PC.
It secures your PC in all-around protection with AntiVirus,
AntiMalware (AVG Resident Shield), AVG Anti-Rootkit,//

Great !!!! That's all an AV needs to work.

//AVG Email Scanner, AVG Protective Cloud Technology, AVG Community
Protection Network, AVG LinkScanner Surf-Shield, AVG Social Networking
Protection.//

And that's what pays for the "free version". Your personal
data.

Downloaded and installed Free AVG 32 bit. All was well till the 2nd
morning when I turned off AVG's nag screen which was trying to sell me
the paid version. Suddenly my CPU usage, both cores, shot to 100%.
Temps went from a sedate 33 to 44c. I shutdown. This evening while
trying to turn off AVG it cured itself. When Googled I found another
man who had same problem with AVG. No fix. Uninstalled it. Tried to
reinstall Kaspersky, no good, install fails in the middle of install.
Guess I have no anti virus.

lazy stretch, last bu was 1-5-19.

I once built a "tower of power" for a guy from Brazil or some other
S.A. country. An exceptional case, maybe 10 3.5/5.25" exposed drive
bays, except I'd grown tired of the bulkiness. Nice guy, I knew well
enough, so I cut every corner to get every aspect right for him, as he
subsequently was very impressed, for his first computer with
absolutely nothing priced above, at the least half or a quarter what
qualifies by a storefront, at an absolute minimum. (My stock: barely
new or used parts, by still . . .)

First thing, he then thinks, most righteously deserving this fine and
upstanding Tower of Power, as soon as my back is turned, is to head
over to CompUSA and buy Symantec Antivirus Suite and install the
suite.

He then called me for a necessary consolation: corrections, as I
advised the software product be removed, which I did after so little
time, in addition, to find it would first require a FDISK /MBR before
reconstituting the original intent and structure of a HDD I'd prepared
for him. (I'd likely, by then, knew to prepare by "Ghost" or imagery.)

All in all, probably a no less than a quarter more in initial cost,
than what he greased my palm with, for that momentary lapse into
impetuosity, I suppose. He's the only guy I've seen who could pick
up, from total flop in the strings, a guitar, to then tune it by ear.
Spot on. (Mandarin Chinese, according to research, are only taught
and supposed to hear like that.)
