Get the macafee removal tool from their site,
and install avast.
macafee(and norton)are resource hogs.
(and yet you have to pay for them....)

I also have run AVG, Avast and various other "freebie" anti-virus packages
and have found them to be excellent. You may however want to look at the
one I am currently using "Microsoft Security Essentials". MS are not
pushing this (probably in case of class action suits) but it is available
free from their website, updates with Windows Update and so far seems pretty
impressive.

Full scans are slow because they are checking everything. Other than when
you first install it any subsequent scanning is of dubious benefit -
especially given that it should scan everything you try to load or run. So
whether the full system scan is slow or fast really shouldn't matter. Its
whether it detects and blocks any nasties which is the important thing.

That said, like Sjouke has suggested, there are other anti-virus products
out there for you to take your pick of.

If you are using your PC for work then you will have to pay for your
anti-virus (unless you use Comodo anti-virus) so sticking with McAfee is
probably reasonable. If on the other hand your PC is for private
non-commercial use then there are lots of antiv-virus products for you to
choose from which won't cost you a penny. I probably ought to update this
list, but these are the free ones I know of:
http://www.cryer.co.uk/resources/antivirus.htm Personally I'd recommend AVG,
but I recognise that avast (Sjouke's recommendation) does seem the more
popular.

Avira Antivirus has excellent detection rates, low resource overheads and
has a free version.

.... and? There's no reason to expect or need full scans to
be ultra-fast.

Either you are satisfied with the product when it isn't
doing the scan or you aren't and for that reason it should
be replaced.

It looks like McAfee does a full scan once per week by default. It
actually takes considerably less than my estimate of 5 hours.
