Default Are Semprons inchangable onto Athlon motherboards?

That is, could a great deal on a Sempron during the building of a new
system lead me to spend those dollars in the present on something else,
with the plan to later throttle up the processor to an Athlon (64?)
using the same motherboard and memory?

Or are the architectures too different and it's a no starter from the
get go?

There are two different Semprons. One for socket A and one for socket
754. You would need the 754 to upgrade to A64, but you could also OC the
Sempron like they did in the following link:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...n-3100-oc.html
and then in a couple years upgrade to a socket 939, or whatever they
have at that time.

Socket A ----462 pin
Socket 754---754 pin
Socket 939---939 pin

Semprons, up to 3000+, will work on the same motherboards
as the Athlon XP's (socket A, 333 bus speed).
Motherboard should have a resent bios update.

Socket A will be slowly fading out as the socket 754
takes it's place.

Sempron 3100+ works on the newer socket 754.

So be willing to spend about $180+tax for a motherboard/CPU
combo that will support future Athlon 64 cpus.

The only advantage socket 939 has over the 754
is a better memory intereface.
