Default Display Stays On

Some of our laptops turn the display on when
there's a background job running but no activity
-- where the display normally goes dark and stays
dark.

XP, running jobs remotely under Cygwin.

We've never been able to figure out what's causing
it. If you manually turn the display off

#include windows.h
main() {
sleep(1);
SendMessage(HWND_BROADCAST, WM_SYSCOMMAND,
SC_MONITORPOWER, (LPARAM) 2);
exit(0);
}

it comes back on after a while.

The only "fix" so far is set the power scheme to
"Do nothing when I close the lid" and shut the lid
as far as necessary to turn off the display.

You want the display off because the fluorescent
display lamp will age and burn out otherwise.

This won't answer your question...but I replace many CFL bulbs (not sure if they are comparable,just similar) in an institutional setting. The longest lasting bulbs have been the ones always left-on.
