Default Optorite 4802 (48x16x48) Firmware Upgradable to 5202?

Hello All,

I have an Optorite 4802 and I just updated to the 150E firmware. I
noticed that one of the 52X firmware's follow suit with the model
scheme (x02). Now I have a couple for friends with liteon's that
upgraded their firmware to get there 48 up to a 52 so I thought I
would try it with the Optorite. When I try to update it tells me that
the firmware isn't for my model. Something tells me this update does
that so I have to drop the dough on a new drive but I also think if
you hack the BIN file that you could get around this and get that 48
to a 52. So my question is : Has anyone tired this, if so did it work
and if it did where did you get the bin file from cause I would love
to upgrade this thing

Thanks

Hacking the firmware would be potentially ruinous and certainly not
worth the effort. The difference in actual operating speed between 48x
and 52x would be very, very small. In fact, depending on the speed of
the drives supplying or receiving data, there may not be any
difference at all.

I found something interesting about their firmware.... I have an MSI
CR52-A2 drive which is really an Optorite CW5205 (52x24x52). I thought I
might try flashing the CW5201 firmware since this is a 52x32x52 drive, and
there have been some early pics kicking around with MSI drive with 52x32x52
written on the front. I was hoping maybe my drive would do 32xRW at a
stretch, but maybe MSI had downrated it for stability, compatibility,
licencing... whatever.

Strange thing is, when I checked the firmware for the 5205 and the 5201, I
found they are *exactly* the same. Bit for bit identical. So anyway I
flashed the 5201 firmware into my drive and it came up as a CW5205 :-( So
there must be some hardware differences between the two drives. So maybe
your drive really won't do 52x?

[snip]

I'm happy with the drive myslef I just thought It would be neat-o to tweak

it a bit

Same as me. Can't say 32xRW would be a big deal since (a) I don't use RW
that much, and (b) you can't get 32x media anyway. But I just like messing
about :-)
