Default AMD adds an Opteron model costing $3199

Hot on the heals of Intel announcing that they are adding an Itanium
processor costing around $700, AMD is adding an Opteron costing over
$3000, the Opteron 846. They also announced a 1-way Opteron model
costing $669, the Opteron 146. Both the Opteron 146 and 846 run at
2.0Ghz, which is up from their previous high of 1.8Ghz, and they both
join the model 246 which is already shipping.

Interesting how it's only big news when Intel adds a cheap processor,
and when AMD adds an expensive processor. :-)

Because you don't take special note of the status quo. Only reversals
make the news for many people.

Also there is some rumours out there that when the Athlon 64 arrives there's
going to be a huge two-tier differential amongst the parts too. The regular
top-speed A64 will be in the $300-400 range, whereas the top-speed A64FX
will be in the $800 range. Yeesh, I wonder if the dual-channel memory is
really worth it for the A64FX over the A64?
