Thing is kicking my ass, between the NT bootloader, special
crypt-locker security crap, hidden partiton, and the install. Round and round, some more we go. Trying to position it at advantage to where I can get it just right and nail it with a binary sector backup. Uh huh. Nooo way. Installed it half a dozen times, and it's a real Genuine Product BITCH about going either after any/what&however HDDs for either that 100M "security" partition thingy, (seems want lay in the security partition if any available/RAW data is available on ANY drive), or takes a double-down and stomp approach/load, without out security partion, on most any Primary Partition - especially seems to like pre-loaded Boot Arbitors - smashed all too aplomb anything other than its own NT-Loader (rolled into GRUB, of all ungodly things). Real bitchy/picky about paritions, even its own lousy middlings, as well (had to figure to back partway out after partitioning in the intall screen, and go back in directly after to overcome it's spitting out error codes). Install is overall a nightmare. Copied the DVD to a SDD but it won't take/run, at least for me, without a DVD. Hm. I'm not sure, still trying, if I can add it for a measely 3 OS on 3 SDD PrimPart's. Sure would be a hell of a lot easier if the whole install business wasn't so nasty about the time it squats on top my DVD, stinking up the whole room. And, hey, I want my own damn boot arbitrator and not MS's - messing up whatever else -when- it can get its hands on it. IOW - it's a Pull Your Drives 1st Install, pay lots of attention - as in be real careful when taking that shoe box of flashdrives and filling them up with MBR/Parition/Arbitrator utilities amnong alt flashboot OS's and whatnot. (Some of that crap is no damn good, likely dated/disfunction too.) Working with a lot of MBR alterations and flying partition changes on the fly - make a mistake with the wrong utility and worse ain't half of what a bad mistake means. Well, everybody's running it. I just like the pain of doing it differently. Sector/partition backups (did you know it'll puke if you change/resize the install partition), and haven't even got around to the MBR for the NT Loader. I can live with keeping them both the same size, a relative symbiotic placement - once getting down to where it doesn't mess with ANYTHING else (next stage is SDD only - W7, would you believe it, actually goes thru! the BIOS's disabling of HDDs and still "sees" them - figure that, thxs.) I'll be pulling the plugs on my other HDDs this next time up. |

(Same, thing it's 45 seconds for restoring my XP images - 1.5 minute to make 'em.) Discounting the NTLoader/parition(?). Haven't figured all the MBR and whatnot angles. My old Samsung 60G SDD is across the room and damn its nice a media center. What I'm thinking is W7 needs its own SSD/HDD, in a whole another class about how it installs/runs/bak/restore. Wish I had another, extra-extra 60G SSD. Make things easier. 10 or more year old OS, sure. And installing the latest and greatest at 3,000KB/s from a DVD now-a-days is so great. Didn't XP come on a thingy 1/6 that size, once called a C-ee D-ee? |

Still nice, knowing I've that option in case something spectacular in programming comes along. Had to give up XP on the SSD, which semi-sucks for a hybrid SSD-XP setup (programs only are linked to a SSD partition, the main OS is platters). 3 primary SSD parts, 2 are w7, minimum apparently, and xp goes black and reboots if I put it on a 3rd (logical portion is 3 drives on the SSD, tho it wouldn't help if I cleared the logical portions out). Oh, well - I can always go radical when the next samsung 128G evo pops up for $50 or $60 (be nice to score a 256G for $70 or 80). Radical backup speeds, maybe, and next best thing to virtuality (flipping the power to switch near instant to another OS). |
