I would go for the 9600proXT as the current nVidia cards are awful at
directx9 games.

Personally, I'd go for the 5700 Ultra. It outperforms the 9600XT in most
tests, and nvidias drivers tend to be of better quality, and are updated
more often than ATI's.
Plus it has very good multi monitor and TV-Out support.

Dont listen to people who tell you the FX line sucks at DX9/Pixel Shader 2.0
effects.
This WAS true of the 5600, 5200 and to a lesser degree the 5800, but the
core revisions made to the 5700 (integer shaders replaced with floating
point shaders/significantly improved vertex shaders), make it a very solid
performer for it's price point.

But dont take just the advice of people on the newsgroups, check out some
professional review sites also.
There tend to be less amateur fan boys there than here.

I have a MSI 5700 Ultra that is excellent in picture quality and happily
overclocks
The video core clock is currently running at 475 mhz and the video memory
clock at 1 Ghz !!
Not knocking the radeons, just love my Nvidia card

I've got a 9500 pro, great card, if you can find it, get it. But from a
9600xt or a 5700, I'd say the 5700, good card, very new, beats out the
radeon in most tests, and if you buy an MSI version, you'll be very happy,
they tend to give you ****loads of extras.

if your on a slight budget i would look at the Aopen Aeolus FX 5900 XT don't
think its out on market just yet but should be soon, according to what i
read this is faster than a 5700 ultra and is near enough comparable to a
5900 ultra! 8)

GeForce FX 5900SE

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...9&searchdepa=0

this is nvidia's best price/performance card in a LONG time. its relatively
new, and fills the gap between the 9700PRO and the 9600XT. It's an
overclocking beast, thanks to an underclocked 5900/U core and 256bit memory
with ramsinks
