No you are not. You are baffled by self-indulgent arting of websites
(and other communications media). If the sites were 'designed' you
wouldn't be baffled. The design credo is that 'form must fit function.'
If the function is to persuade you to spend money, then a designer would
see to it that you got the information you need, in a form you can
handle, to lead to that decision. A designer wouldn't care whether he,
or the client, 'likes' the site.

In a choice between 'like' and 'function', a designer always picks
'function'. An artist always picks 'like'.

Any commercial firm with a website I can't easily use, doesn't get my
business. For the same reason as spammers never get my business. They've
lost the plot. They don't understand the needs of their existing and
potential customers. That is a recipe for commercial death. I can't
afford to get locked in to any supplier of goods or services who isn't
going to be around on the timescale of my use of those goods or
services.

Almost as good as me logging a fault about http://www.tesco.com/access
because the pound sign only displays in IE.

Tesco's surprising response was that they only support IE and Netscape
(this excludes Mozilla for instance).

All the more surprising, then, that their "about this service" link off
the link you give above says the following:
quote
Our design philosophy has been to create a web service that provides a
simple but effective product searching and ordering service that works
with many different makes and models of web browser.

In creating the design, we use HTML to v3.2 standard but without the use
of framesets, graphics (beyond our logo!), cascading style sheets, and
browser scripts (such as JavaScript).

So much for disability access then.

Re the lynx discussion, you may enjoy visiting messagelabs.com using
Mozilla, Netscape or some other non IE browsers. Blank page or "We don't
support text browsers"

Let's see:

1: Messagelabs is UK based.
2: One of the UK blind users' groups has already kicked off several rounds
of legal action against such sites.

3: ???

I hope you reminded them of their legal obligations...

Messagelabs.com worked fine for me - Mozilla 1.4.

If you are using Lynx[1] because you[2] are, for example, blind[3], you
could use UK Disability Discrimination law to get them to modify the
website.

1. I am not blind. I just prefer to use my ISP's text service instead of
their PPP service most of the time because:
(a) Fetching a web page with lynx is much faster than fetching a web
page and two megabytes of graphics over a 14.4Kb modem and
(b) I don't have to worry about the IE security-hole-of-the-week
that's being exploited by abusers, and
(c) no pop-ups or web bugs.

2. I am not in the UK.

However, *others* may be blind and in the UK.

[1] For various values of Lynx, including any other browser.
[2] FVVO 'you', including 'other people who use lynx'

Oh, I answered for *my* value of "you".

[3] FVVO 'blind' including any disability that makes any specific
website/browser combination inaccessable.

but other
users who *are* in the UK could have similar browser limitations.)

I am frequently baffled by the ****-poor web 'design' of sites that want my
money.

If they cut corners for their web design, how many corners will they be
cutting in the manufacture of their products?

My HTML Sampler page has a section on accessibility and other sections
describing major errors on the part of alleged professional webmasters.

And the thing is, this corner cutting is often more expensive, for a worse
website. Bah!
