From the DriversGuide site
quote
Believe it because it's true... there are no Windows drivers for any
internal ide drive. There are also no "generic 16x dvd drivers" as you state
you have... no drivers are needed when running Windows... all the support
for any dvd drive is provided natively by the windows os and by dvd decoding
software.
Unquote.

Since you didn't provide any information on the details for it, as
near as I can tell from google, the Ultima DH1-G40 is a 16x ATAPI
DVD-ROM drive. Nothing special about it at all.

Like all such drives, you don't need (and there aren't any) model
specific drivers for it when using it with XP. Provided you
physically installed it correctly, it should be automatically detected
by XP and it should work just fine with the built-in ATAPI drivers.

If you're having problems, it's not for lack of a compatible driver.

Thanks.

My PC detects and installs a driver.(cdrom.sys) but the device won't see a
DVD in the slot. CD's are ok.

When you pop in a data DVD, or a movie DVD, can you open it and read
the files? If the problem is that you can see the files on a CD and
can't on a DVD, then something's wrong. On a few models of DVDRW
drives (eg. BenQ DW series), if the power supply is inadequate, the
drive can have trouble reading and burning DVDs, but work fine with
CDs. However, I've never heard of that happening with DVD-ROM drives.
Given the age of the drive (I don't think anyone's made a DVD-ROM
drive in a long while), it could be that something on the read head
may have burnt out. CDs and DVDs use different wavelengths to read
the discs, and that's accomplished by separate LEDs and pickups
mounted on the same head. If one of those is toast, then you'd lose
the ability to read CDs or DVDs but could still be able to read the
other. If that's what's happened, it's not really worth fixing, given
the rather low cost of a new DVD burner.

If it's just that you can't play movies, that's normal. You have to
install a DVD codec to get the computer to do that. Windows doesn't
include one. Most DVD drives are bundled with a DVD player program,
and a DVD codec will be a component of such a program. If you don't
have one, the only legal way to get one is to buy one -- there is no
such thing as a *legal* freeware DVD player. The more popular ones
are PowerDVD from CyberLink or WinDVD from InterVideo and cost about
$60 for the latest versions. Older versions might be available for
less but are harder to track down.

cdrom.sys is the OS driver it should use, is your DVD data
or a movie? If a movie, you may need a player capable of
reading it.

Legal or not, VLC runs rings around those two players.

To reduce the number of questions asking you for more detail information,
I would suggest you to provide more detail of what you do and what kind of
problem when you try etc.. example

- If you put a BLANK or Protected DVD to the drive then you may not see
anything

- CDs are OK but DVDs ain't, then either problem with the DVD, DVD Program
(like selecting wrong mode), or operator. Or you need to give more detail
of the problem than "not OK"

.... and if the DVD part is bad then I would suggest to replace it with a
better one. But in the mean time, try to give a little more detail
information of the Program, Disc, and what you try to do etc..

The device can see and play any CD but will no see a movie or data DVD
eg.Windows Works Suite (genuine)

Sorry for the long quote.

Windows genuine or not has nothing to do with the problem, and it seems
like the problem has nothing to do with the DVD driver either. And it
sounds like there is no problem with the DVD but you have problem playing
some movie on DVD.

And since you still won't give any information of the problem besides
"..it doesn't work..", so the best I can give you is the general information
of some basic requirement for you to figure out what the problem may be.

So, in order for Windows to play a movie on DVD

- The DVD (disc) must be good working DVD

- It will need a program can play movie on DVD

- If it's a home made DVD then the program must be able to play home made
DVD for it to work. Most programs do but some doesn't, and you must know
how to use the program etc..

- If you get the good working DVD and program to play movie on DVD, then you
may need the CODEC for it to work. And if you have program can play DVD
then usually they will come with the standard codec's, but if you try to
play other type of movie (not standard DVD) then you may need some specific
codec.

.... also "movie" and "DVD" still have nothing to do with the problem you
ask, or you don't say it's

- Standard DVD or just some clips you have on DVD. Thyere are many
different formats and they may require some specific codec for it to work.

Thank you Joel for your patience
It is difficult to say what the problem is other than the DVD drive is
visible in "My Computer" but when I insert any DVD the drive still says
"insert a disk". I believe the drive worked before I upgraded to XP from
98se but as I have not needed it till now I can't be sure. All I wish to do
is load a new programme which I have on a DVD. The movie which I inserted
was just to test the drive, it is a standard format I guess.
