DVD-RAM, UDF 2.x, Daylight Saving, TimeStamp
Hi,
If you FileSynch to a FAT volume (e.g. Data Stick) or UDF 1.5 CD-RW there's a problem with daylight saving and file date/time stamps. If you do a backup in the summer, then do a FileCompare in the winter, many files will show as "different" because the FAT and UDF 1.5 disks will only stamp files with LOCAL time instead of UTC. In theory UDF 2.x has an extra field where you can set TimeZone info, but does this field actually get used in software such as InCD and the Windows o/s? -- Gerry_uk |

For example: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1736242,00.asp InCD 5.5.0.5 time stamp problem is fixed in InCD 5.5.0.11 bundled in Nero 7.5.9.0A. .. ================================================== = Mike Richter - the Slimiest Lying Friggin SOB (UDF) ================================================== = The slimiest lying friggin SOB Mike Richter has been for YEARS blaming the UDF -- to weasel out the bugs of DirectCD: ------------------------------------------ UDF is a fragile format UDF is an unreliable format the format is very fragile and unreliable The format is bad - it loses data The fault is not with the software but with the format There is an inherent problem in UDF Packet writing is the same as UDF. I have used only DCD for packet writing, have had no problems due to the software - but too many due to the format itself to bother with it any longer. ------------------------------------------ But then again: ====================== From: Mike Richter (the Slimiest Lying Friggin ****) Date: 5/4/06 Subject: UDF Has just bit me in the bum I have used UDF for many years, but yesterday I had my first corruption. I am now wondering whether to bother with UDF First, your problem is not with UDF ====================== ------------------------------- Wow! I've seen similar problem when I use file comparator to check files on flash drive vs hd. Flash drive shows newer sometimes even though I've copied from hd and date/time is same. Never really pursued as to why. Dave Cohen |

Hi Dave,
I'm fairly sure you'll find this is related to your issue of the files not comparing properly. The fix algorithm is somewhat complex and has to account for copy to and from different file systems. I'm interested to know if Microsoft's new Synch manager in Vista takes this into account?
