AM2, replaces 939.

Socket 939 is now obsolete. You want to look at Socket AM2.

940 was replaced long ago by 939 which has recently been replaced by
AM2. The major difference is that 939 uses DDR and AM2 requires DDR2.

Ok cheers ppl next question! What is the best AMD AM2 processor to purchase
now i talking pounds here i was looking at the 4200 or the 4600. I would
like to have a go at overclocking which is the best core to go for on this
subject?

If you're going to overclock, then the X2 3800+ would probably be the best
choice. With the right touch, it should clock up to 5000+ speeds. 103-106
pounds on pricewatch.co.uk.

And AM2 is being replaced by AM2+ (and AM3 q3 '07) and AM2 has no
speed|power|anything over 939, all it does have is 1 pin and 2x the RAM
cost, DDR[1] is cheaper and faster than DDR2.

I am building an OC'ing box around a DFI CFX 3200/939 and doing so for a
lot less than it would cost with a AM2, just gave £100 for a very good
stepping 939 x2 (brand new, I also will be able to run optys found 2nd
hand dirt cheap), I also have RAM (OC known speeds) but can spend half the
amount for something faster 'if' it runs out of legs.

If you 'need' to have the latest to show off go with AM2, if you build a
box to use for a few years, it does not matter which way.

AM2 has quite a bit over 939. For one, It's the current mainstream CPU and
isn't scheduled for death yet like 939 is. it's also going to be
backwards compatable with AM3 CPU's. So it's really the right choice at
this yime. The fastest 939 X2 cpu you can buy is the 4800+. You can get a
5200+ in AM2 and future AM3 cpu's that will be faster. I haven't found
much difference in the price of DDR and DDR2 ram, but DDR2 supplies twice
the bandwidth of DDR over a bus of the same clock speed. PC3200 for
instance provides a bandwith of 3.GBps on a 200MHz clock DDR400. PC2-3200
provides the same bandwidth on a 100MHz clock, but PC2-6400 provides
6.4GBps over the same 200Mhz as PC3200. Not that it matters that much I
just wanted to make that clear.
