thanks in advance!

940 was replaced long ago by 939 which has recently been replaced by
AM2. The major difference is that 939 uses DDR and AM2 requires DDR2.

And AM2 is being replaced by AM2+ (and AM3 q3 '07) and AM2 has no
speed|power|anything over 939, all it does have is 1 pin and 2x the RAM
cost, DDR[1] is cheaper and faster than DDR2.

I am building an OC'ing box around a DFI CFX 3200/939 and doing so for a
lot less than it would cost with a AM2, just gave £100 for a very good
stepping 939 x2 (brand new, I also will be able to run optys found 2nd
hand dirt cheap), I also have RAM (OC known speeds) but can spend half the
amount for something faster 'if' it runs out of legs.

If you 'need' to have the latest to show off go with AM2, if you build a
box to use for a few years, it does not matter which way.

AM2+ has HT bus at 3000MHz, so it will be faster than AM2 for I/O intensive
apps. It is also better suited to for the next generation of DX10 video
cards.

Given the AM2 can't fully utilise the current HT how will a faster HT
benefit?

I was interested to see that when the AM2s came out there was so little
difference in performance compared to the 939s that Tom's Hardware Guide
kept their 939 FX60 stock test platform. The problem for AMD was that the
939s weren't starved for memory bandwidth to begin with, so having lots of
extra bandwidth provided nearly no improvement. Furthermore, because of the
CPU multiplier problem with certain AM2s (ie, those where the CPU frequency
isn't evenly divisible by 400), in certain conditions the 939 equivalent can
get better benchmark results because the AM2 version has to run its DDR2
slower than DDR2-800.

It is also better suited to for the next generation
of DX10 video cards.

How do you figure that?

I suspect he's talking about the 3000 HT bus. Someone said the
current 2000HT couldn't really supply 2x16 PCI-e video cards at full
tilt even if you think your expensive motherboard can.

Me ? I don't follow it all that closely anymore.

It just changes again in 2 years.

However, even I think AM2 is pretty worthless.
