Which brand of inexpensive DVD-/+ RW burns fewer coasters?
I have been purchasing the cheap GQ DVD-RW+/- disks from Frys but end
up with a lot of movies that hang in the middle or just end up with coasters. Since I am on a student's budget, I am hoping someone could suggest any inexpensive brands which are less prone to errors. I have the Plextor DVDR PX-708A and Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-8112S burners. Where is best place to purchase them? Thanks in advance for all suggestions. Arawak |

Just be sure it's RiData, not the unbranded Ritek discs. It's very easy to tell the difference both in physical appearance and burn quality. The equal of the more expensive TY media. BenQ 4x DVD-Rs are also quite good. They're made by Sony and ring in at $50 CDN for 100 4x DVD-Rs. Also has a very low error rate, almost as good as the Ritek discs. Even comes in a cakebox. For DVD+R, A brand called "SmartBuy" is the best I've found for low priced +R media. They use Optodisc media, and while Smartbuy is less expensive than the OptoDisc's own, it strangely has a higher manufacturing quality than the OptoDisc branded stuff. The OptoDisc ones tend to have some problems with uneven resin at the hub (air bubbles and gaps near the hub). The Smartbuy ones don't seem to have this. Weird. Speaking of weird, while smartbuy does sell pretty good quality discs, the people responsible for their labelling designs must be high on acid. Their label designs have ranged from normal (white/matte silver with black/red lettering) to downright embarassing (green with a cartoon cockroach on it). Best place? Find a local store. I buy my RiData discs from a local mom&pop shop, and the BenQ spindle, I bought from FutureShop (In USA, they're called BestBuy). It may not be as convenient as online mail order, but you won't get dinged by surprise shipping charges or import duties. You also have the option of directly inspecting the items before purchase. With mail order, there have been instances where stores would charge you for RiData (Ritek A Grade discs) and send you unbranded Ritek Arita (Grade B and C factory rejects). --------------------------------------------- MCheu |
