Default Major Computer Problems

I live in Toronto Canada, and I have some serious computer problems
First I will explain why I am angry .. then I will explain the problems I am
having with my computer lol

I tried installing Macromedia Dreamweaver...Fireworks and Microsoft Office
2003. Each time I got an error saying that I require a newer version of
windows. Windows 2000 or later!

So normally I would NEVER use WinME...but I have some serious problems with
my computer. I've taken it in to the repair shop a few times...but to no
avail..they say nothing is wrong with my board...chip...or memory. The
problems have been active since the day I purchased my computer...and as
stupid as I am, I did not send it back to them, and I lost out on warranty.
I'll eat whatever I have to in order to get it working properly however,
since it was my fault for not returning it!

What happens is I constantly get page faults when browsing with Internet
Explorer. Explorer will crash quite frequently, and I have to restart my
browser all over again. A few times it was some sort of HTML.dll
error....but not every time.

This is VERY annoying...but something I learned to live with. I have tried
installing WinXP on this computer...but for some reason after a month or two
... I will end up getting a blue code stop error (C00002x or whatever the
number is) ...or the computer starts acting VERY wierd...like losing all
icons on my desktop, and can't get them back no matter what I do .. and I'm
back to format and reinstalling an operating system....IF that even works.

My computer is a 1.9ghz p4...80gig HD .. 256ddr ram .. geforce 4 mx440 ...
and the thing runs 100000000X worse than my 700mhz hp used to lol

When I first purchased it, while installing an OS, the computer would go
blue code stop during install every time. When I took it in to a repair
shop, they said that when they unplugged my DVD Rom, it seemed to smooth the
problem out. They said there was some sort of conflict. So I learned to
live without the DVD Rom.

Then, I took the computer in to get it repaired again when my motherboard
shorted out. They replaced the board, and while they were doing that I
explained to them my problems with programs constantly crashing, and my OS
issues. They said that it could be either a memory problem, or a cpu
problem. They ran tests on the memory and cpu....everything checked out. I
tried using a different video card.....still problems.

Does anyone have any ideas? I am at a complete loss!!!
Thanks!
Arjay

You're angry because you're incapable of reading the system requirements of
a piece of software?! It *CLEARLY* states on the Office 2003 box "requires
2000 SP3 or later or Windows XP". ME is newer than 2000, but it's 9x-based -
2003 requires an NT-based OS. Most *DEFINITELY* an ID-TEN-T error. The
latest DreamWeaver (TTBOMK) also requires 2000 or XP and ditto Fireworks.
You really are an idiot aren't you - wasting nearly a grand on software
(assuming they're all full versions) because you didn't think to read the
system requirements.

Did you check whether your hardware and software was XP compatible?! Did you
make sure that drivers were available for your hardware? That stop error is
caused when a kernel-mode process incorrectly attempts to perform memory
operations. This is typically caused by faulty drivers or buggy software. Is
all your software XP compatible? This isn't a hardware issue, so of course
no fault can be found with your hardware! More information can be found here

You waste a grand on software because you can't be bothered to check system
requirements and you're calling *ME* ignorant?!

Maybe you should take a quick look in the mirror...

Maybe he bought the software whilst he actually had XP on the machine? It
seems like you know a little about software, that's all well and good but
just because that's your area of expertise doesn't mean everyone's problems
are down to what you know.

Bull****. It's hardware alright, I can feel it in my bones. Bad RAM I'd say.
I've had XP running on machines dating back to socket 7, running proggys
that were designed for Win 3.1 or 95 and using components of the same era
without experiencing the problems he describes.

You should change your nick to 'arrogant arsehole'.

Then why did the shop change things around? They obviously knew the hardware
was at fault and did the least they could to try to fob him off until the
warranty expired.

Amazing how you can state this categorically with so little information. You
must be ****ing psychic (or psycho).

This is alt.comp.hardware idiot. If he wanted your opinion he could have
gone to alt.iknoweverythingorthinkido.****wit.

Sheesh! It's ******s like you who put people off from asking advice in NGs.

Bull****. Someone gave their opinion, they didn't 'tell you what your
problem was'.

That opinion is simply that, and most likely incorrect. The OP was quite
right to reply in the same tone in which he was adressed.

I'll not stoop as low as the other arrogant poster there...

Did you check out the power supply? Sometimes an under-rated PSU can cause
problems, or, one that is going faulty. Is your system being cooled
properly? If you simply installed the OS and received a blue screen, it can
hardly be a driver issue.

Look at your PSU and system cooling, for starters. The other thing I've
seen cause that is memory errors, i.e. RAM modules being faulty. If you
have multiple modules and don't have dual channel, try one memory module at
a time, see if that helps.

@drian.

I'm assuming you bought this machine to run XP on? It should be more than
capable for the job. Man you should have been all over the vendor on a daily
basis until it was sorted.

What happens is I constantly get page faults when browsing with
Internet Explorer. Explorer will crash quite frequently, and I have
to restart my browser all over again. A few times it was some sort
of HTML.dll error....but not every time.

This is VERY annoying...but something I learned to live with. I have

As the machine seems to be pretty useless right now I'd start by running
memetest86 (it runs from a boot-disk and is freely downloadable). I think
your problem may lie with your RAM, regardless of what the vendor claims. It
is the most likely culprit, followed by a bad PSU.

My computer is a 1.9ghz p4...80gig HD .. 256ddr ram .. geforce 4
mx440 ... and the thing runs 100000000X worse than my 700mhz hp used
to lol

What motherboard?

When I first purchased it, while installing an OS, the computer would
go blue code stop during install every time. When I took it in to a
repair shop, they said that when they unplugged my DVD Rom, it seemed
to smooth the problem out. They said there was some sort of
conflict. So I learned to live without the DVD Rom.

Maybe the DVD-ROM was set to use DMA (Direct Memory Access) as it should
have been and this caused errors. Conflicts are there to be sorted out, not
just given up on.

Then, I took the computer in to get it repaired again when my
motherboard shorted out.

How did this happen?

They replaced the board, and while they
were doing that I explained to them my problems with programs
constantly crashing, and my OS issues. They said that it could be
either a memory problem, or a cpu problem. They ran tests on the
memory and cpu....everything checked out. I tried using a different
video card.....still problems.

It's not your video card.

Does anyone have any ideas? I am at a complete loss!!!

As I said, memtest86, run it for a few hours, overnight if needed, and if it
reports even one error then the RAM is poked. If it runs fine then try
running Prime95 (free download) and see if that reports errors.

How are your temperatures? Have you ran a disk-checking utility? Even
Checkdisk (Windows) will do for a start. I presume you are running it at
stock speeds and not overclocking? I would say your problem could be, in
order of likelyhood, RAM, inadequate power-supply, HDD problems or
motherboard.

Thanks!
Arjay

No problems. Post back and we'll see if we can sort this sucker out.
