300gig HD, only showing as 137HD during win2k install
hello all, this is the 2nd HD where i've run into this problem, of a
misinstall ?locking the HD as the wrong size, this has nothing to do with the OS, as I'm installing from a booted CD, its a new bios that is detecting the HD as 300gig, just in the installation i'm only offered the small partition and deleting and recreating doesn't fix either, i even did a low level format on the drive to no avail what else am i missing, what else should i try ? thanks in advance M |

Your Win 2K OS has a partition size limitation of 137GB. Just make a total of 3 or more partitions with different drive letters. --- KC COMPUTERS www.kc-computers.com Computer Sales & Service since 1991!!! BUT you still need that SP4 (and the registry tweak for EnableBigLBA?) -- Tumppi ================================= A lot learned from these newsgroups Helsinki, FINLAND (translations from/to FI not always accurate ================================= |

you know as i tried to indicate i don't think this is a windows OS
problem, this is while booting from CD, trying to install SP2 of win2k, it DID allow a 300gig partition and formatting once because one can't tweak an OS if they can't get it installed i think the drive is 'locked' On Dec 18, 6:43 am, "Thomas Wendell" wrote: foo1 wrote: hello all, this is the 2nd HD where i've run into this problem, of a misinstall ?locking the HD as the wrong size, this has nothing to do with the OS, as I'm installing from a booted CD, its a new bios that is detecting the HD as 300gig, just in the installation i'm only offered the small partition and deleting and recreating doesn't fix either, i even did a low level format on the drive to no avail what else am i missing, what else should i try ? thanks in advance MI suppouse you need SP4 slipstreamed to install straight on 300GB Or, as KC says, make smaller partitions. not only is win 2k restricting the drive you need winxp sp2 and a board that
will allow a 300 gig drive. I just got a seagate 300gb hard drive. It comes with a CD-rom that you
boot up first to configure the drive before you install windows 2000. I have an older motherboard that has the 137gb limit. What I found out through trial and error is to first use the disk wizard utility on the cd-rom to configure just one partition that is less than 137gb. I made my first partition 67gb. Then I installed windows 2000. Then I updated it to SP4, which allows greater than 137gb partitions. Then I made a second partition using disk wizard for windows. The 2nd partition was about 211gb. So then I had the full 300 gigabytes on 2 partitions, minus about 20gb for what I assume is some kind of disk management overhead. |

are you guys saying, that if the 300gig HD is running as a slave
and a 6gig HD is NOW running sp4 that from the sp4 OS I should be able to see 300gigs of space on the slave , says with the Win2k OS's disk management tools as what I DO see is 128gig of unpartitioned space right now thx again On Dec 18, 10:38 am, "Rod Speed" wrote: KC Computers wrote: hello all, this is the 2nd HD where i've run into this problem, of a misinstall ?locking the HD as the wrong size, this has nothing to do with the OS, as I'm installing from a booted CD, its a new bios that is detecting the HD as 300gig, just in the installation i'm only offered the small partition and deleting and recreating doesn't fix either, i even did a low level format on the drive to no avail what else am i missing, what else should i try ? Just wipe the drive with something like clearhdd to get rid of the MBR and you should see 300G of unpartitioned space again.
