Plextor PX-708UF problems with CD, but not DVD
I have a Plextor external PX-708UF drive where inserting
a CD (burned, blank, or manufactured stamped) does not get recognized. The light on the burner turns off and Windows does not think anything is there. However if I load a DVD (burned, blank, or stamped), it works fine. Is there a separate mechanism for CDs and DVDs? I'm wondering if it's still safe to use the drive for DVDs. (I'm using the latest firmware) |

Premature failure of the CD side of this drive has been reported on various forums virtually since its introduction. Try doing the self-test using recommended (e.g. T-Y) DVD media. If it passes, then it's probably safe to continue to use for DVD burning. |

The self test: Fails with a TY CD-R Succeeds with a TY DVD+R I'm a bit amazed that this (1) has happened as I do not burn many CDs and (2) this is a problem previously reported. I found a posting on a PX-716 as well. Hmmm... Any idea on repair cost? It's 3 years old so out of warranty. If cost is high I might spend $100 for a PX-760A. |

Plextor getting out of consumer market

I can only guess that with the number of drives out there the margins are pretty thin for them. Kind of a pain. Now I have to figure out what drive to buy from all the hardware that's out there. Any suggestions for a high quality drive? |

Plextor getting out of the consumer market.... Not...

Plextor is downsizing, but will continue to market to consumers: http://www.plextor.com/english/news/...affirms_pr.htm http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=207064 I think I'll put in an order for a PX-760A, just in case! |
