Hi All,

I asked here a little while ago about upgrading my old Deskpro 4000S
5166X. Well, I've gone ahead and bough a new harddisc and cd drive...

But, I've got a couple of problems with the hd :-( It's a Western
Digital 80GB drive.

I've got it set up in place of the CD drive so I can transfer my files.
When I start up, I get an error: "1791-Disk Controller Error" but this
doesn't seem to matter much as I can just carry on anyway! However,
using fdisk, it only seems to see 8GB.
When I go into the BIOS, that only sees 8GB too - in the storage section:

Size: 8455
Heads: 0
Cylinders: 1023
Sectors/Track: 63
Disable Translation: Off

Should the cylinders be at 0? What should I do about "disable
translation"? I'm planning to use Linux on a partition once I get it all
running - does that matter?

Crucial question: can I get more than 8GB?

Quite a long post, sorry - hope someone can help!

Thanks,
Adam

P.S. It's set to slave - I did notice the thing in the FAQ about using
cable select, but that just results in an error: "1782-Disk controller
failure" which I can't get past.
